Summary of 2023

  • 4 new Wikipeedia articles were created (academic year 2022/2023 Autumn). 
  • 5 MA theses were defended: 
  • „EU environmental law – when waste is recovered and when it ceases to be waste“ (“Euroopa Liidu keskkonnaõigus – millal on toimunud jäätmete taaskasutus ja lakkamine?”) by Elen Krusell 
  • „Commission vs member state – why does the European Commission lose in Court of Justice of the European Union?“ (“ Komisjon vs liikmesriik – miks komisjon Euroopa Liidu kohtus kaotab?”) by Jaanus Rihkrand 
  • „Application of single market law to purely internal situations in case law of Court of justice of the European Union“ (“Siseturuõiguse kohaldamine liikmesriigi sisestele olukordadele Euroopa Kohtu praktikas”) by Laura Melk 
  • „Distinction between the anti-competitive object and effect contained in the treaty on the functioning of the European Union and the Estonian Competition Act in the context of  European Union Competition Law and Estonian Competition Law“ („Euroopa Liidu toimimise lepingus ja konkurentsiseaduses sisalduva konkurentsi kahjustava eesmärgi ning tagajärje eristamine Euroopa Liidu konkurentsiõiguse ja Eesti konkurentsiõiguse kontekstis“) by Kristo Pullerits  
  • „Clarity of a claim in a bankruptcy petition procedure“ („Nõude selgus pankrotiavalduse menetluses“) by Anu Liinsoo  
  • 2 BA research papers were defended:  
  • “The market economy investor principle in European Union state aid law” („Turumajanduse tingimustes tegutseva investori põhimõte Euroopa Liidu riigiabi õiguses”) by Anastassia Ostrovskaja  
  • “The purpose and application of other measures to secure a claim in practice” („Hagi tagamise muu abinõu eesmärk ja kohaldamine praktikas“) by Aivar Kamal  
  • Several schools were visited, including Secondary School of Rapla and Tallinn Downtown Elementary school’s  
  • We participated in various conferences and spoke in national meedia: 
  • Dr Carri Ginter and alumnus Aleksandr Šapovalov have written an article in Äripäev on CJEU judgement regarding beneficial ownership of companies. 
  • Dr Carri Ginter appeared on the podcast Uudis+, where he commented on the possible consequences of a recent CJEU judgement regarding the anti-money-laundering directive. 
  • Dr Carri Ginter presented and discussed at Future Forum Estonia regarding litigation and media with a focus on national and EU law and practice. 
  • Dr Carri Ginter participated in a “National Law versus EU Law” panel in conference “Estonian Lawyers’ Days”. 
  • We published different articles, from which we would highlight: 
  • Dr Carri Ginter and Anneli Soo „Public order as a lifebelt in the fight against racism and xenophobia“ in Juridica 2022/6 
  • Our input on passing legislation 
  • Dr Carri Ginter participated in the legal commission of the Estonian Parliament discussing the freedom of speech and the prohibition of symbols of Russian aggression against Ukraine. This discussion led to the pass of the aforementioned legislation.
