Carri Ginter and Piret Schasmin visited Gustav Adolfi Gümnaasium

“Your Phone and Privacy” is a lecture given by Piret Schasmin and Dr Carri Ginter to high school students. On 24th of March, we were invited to Gustav Adolf Grammar School for their science day. Some key points:

  • Privacy and the need to be alone are crucial for personal development. In a world full of cameras, we develop differently than we would otherwise.
  • Your phone contains more information about you than your room does.
  • On a regular day, the state doesn’t need to know who I am, where I am, who I’m with, where I’m going, or where I’m coming from.
  • Science fiction films like Demolition ManMinority ReportOmniscient, and others provide insights into what is often dreamed of in internal security. Which films do you think best predict the future?
  • If someone promises you privacy and security at the same time, there’s a good chance they’re lying or don’t understand what they’re doing.
  • Many cameras can be nice for a short time, until a villain takes control. It’s better to avoid a second coming of Hitler, who used technological solutions to implement his horrific plan.
  • When privacy rights were established, people’s security wasn’t significantly better than it is today.
  • Don’t believe propaganda. Ask for details and make well-thought-out decisions yourself.

The students were inspiring and diligent. The future is in good hands.
