37th Estonian Lawyers’ Days

On 6-7 October 2022, more than 700 Estonian lawyers and scholars gathered in Tartu for “Estonian Lawyers’ Days”. This is the 37th such event in Estonia, happening every second year.

Dr Carri Ginter participated in a “National Law versus EU Law” panel. The panel discussed the constitutional setup of the European Union, the Member States being the Masters of the Treaties and the complex interrelationships between national constitutional courts and the Court of Justice of the European Union. Articles providing a relatively wide possibility to bring new competencies to the EU, such as Article 122 TFEU, were addressed. Developments in Poland and Hungary were discussed. The panel concluded that both EU Law and national constitutions are very much relevant and alive, and both very much matter for the future of the EU. The panel was chaired by Dr Rait Maruste, a former Judge of the European Court of Human Rights and a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Estonia, prof Anneli Albi from Kent University, Klen Jäärats – the Director for European Union Affairs at the Republic of Estonia Government Office and Nele Parrest, a Justice of the Supreme Court of Estonia.
