3.3. Using AI in teaching: Advantages and disadvantages

AI in teaching offers certain advantages, but it is certainly not an ideal application to trust unquestioningly. Therefore, it is worth thoroughly considering how to utilise technology’s benefits in teaching while being aware of its drawbacks.

ADVANTAGE
AI offers the possibility to effectively create learning materials for students with different learning skills and preferences, thus better supporting their learning process.

DISADVANTAGE
However, one must consider the initial time investment required to make AI applications work successfully for one’s goals. It is also important to remember that AI is still a machine, which may not be able to account for all the specific needs of a learning group, so instructors need to review and adapt the materials.

ADVANTAGE
The application of AI helps diversify learning materials and provides an “outside perspective” on initial plans.

DISADVANTAGE
At the same time, attention must be paid when using AI, as it can hallucinate – which means that it can fabricate information or generate incorrect facts. Therefore, it is essential to critically assess the generated content to avoid creating unrealistic tasks or inaccurate learning materials.

ADVANTAGE
AI allows for quick and systematic feedback, helping students notice their mistakes and learn from them.

DISADVANTAGE
On the other hand, machine-generated feedback does not always contribute to the learning process, as students also need human and empathetic support, which can only be provided by the instructor. Therefore, AI feedback must be combined with the instructor’s support.

ADVANTAGE
AI can reduce the time spent preparing lessons and materials and providing feedback.

DISADVANTAGE
However, AI is developing quickly, requiring instructors to stay constantly updated on the changes to apply AI effectively in their teaching. This can take time, and the initial time savings may not be as significant as expected. Still, it is worth selecting specific AI solutions and focusing on learning them, which ensures optimal time usage in the long run.

ADVANTAGE
Using AI in teaching encourages students to use AI applications, helping develop AI literacy, a crucial skill that students will need in the future job market.

DISADVANTAGE
However, it is also essential to develop students’ critical thinking and evaluation skills so they do not become overly dependent on AI, can assess the content provided by AI both substantively and formally, and manage its use effectively.

ADVANTAGE
AI can process large amounts of data, enabling faster analysis.

DISADVANTAGE
However, ensuring that data is always used with privacy and data protection in mind is crucial. Copyright principles must be respected, and confidential or sensitive information should not be entered into AI applications.
