Current perspectives on sex and gender in biomedical research by Prof. Nicole Gervais
In February, Prof. Nicole (Niki) Gervais from the University of Groningen delivered an online lecture at the request of the Molecular Pathology Lab at the University of Tartu titled “Current Perspectives on Sex and Gender in Biomedical Research.” The lecture was organized as a joint initiative between the SysAge project and the REACT consortium.
Prof. Gervais is recognized for her work on sex differences in brain and behavior, and her lecture provided a comprehensive overview of how sex and gender are conceptualized, studied, and integrated into biomedical research. She discussed the biological foundations of sex differences including genetic, hormonal, and cellular mechanisms as well as the broader sociocultural dimensions captured by the concept of gender.
