FLGR.01.186 English Literature from Romanticism to Modernism
Dear students,
Your course book consists of four files (Romanticism and Modernism, pages 1-62, 63-122, 123-167, 168-215). Bring it to class every time you come to the lecture, as it contains, besides large excerpts from Roy Strong’s book The Spirit of Britain: The Narrative History of the Arts that will be of great help to you when preparing for the exam, also texts that we are going to analyze in class. I recommend you print it out, as we are going to be leafing through it a lot and navigating between the files can be awkward.
The three chapters from Andrew Sanders’s standard textbook The Short Oxford History of English Literature will provide the background to the texts discussed and also furnish you with answers to a number of revision questions.
Note. Only two exam questions out of four are based on these reading materials. The other two questions require the analysis of the texts discussed in class, so the attendance of lectures and taking notes is strongly recommended. You will have to answer three questions out of the four in order to pass, so reading the text materials alone will not be sufficient. You will have to combine your own reading with what we do in class.
