Call for Applications: 3rd NearEU Graduate Conference

The NearEU Graduate Conference is organized by the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies to provide the its graduate students with the opportunity to present their works, research projects or papers in the format of an academic conference and receive specialized feedback from fellows, faculty staff, and doctoral students.

We are proud to announce that the third edition of the event will take place on 23 May 2023. Academic convener of the event is Dr. Stefano Braghiroli (University of Tartu). This initiative is developed and implemented with the support of the Jean Monnet Module “Neighbourhood Enlargement and Regionalism in Europe” (NearEU).

The focus of the Graduate Conference is rigorously multi-disciplinary, diverse, and plural in order to guarantee a genuine and open space of discussion and debate to all the students interested to present their works.

While the institute’s graduate students are the primary target group of the event, advanced bachelor students, early stage doctoral students from our and other institutes of the University of Tartu, and from NearEU partner institutions are also welcome. The event is particularly recommended to students who plan to defend their thesis in the Spring semester of 2023.

The Graduate Conference consists of open panels the exact number of which is defined on the basis of the proposals received. Each panel consists of max. four presenters, a chair, and a discussant.

In order to allow an effective discussion in the panels and smooth presentations, individual presentations should not exceed 15 minutes. Following the paper presentations 45 minutes, in each panel, will be devoted to discussion, comments, and Q&A. Conference presenters are welcome, but not required, to submit a paper connected to the presentation prior to the event.

At the conclusion of the event, the board of the conference (consisting of the convener, the panel chairs, and discussants) will select and announce the presentation awarded with the “NearEU GradConf Prize” consisting of a 100 EUR voucher valid for the purchase of books, audio-visuals, and other material. The board’s assessment takes into account the quality and originality of the presentations.

The deadline to submit presentation proposals is May 10. Proposals should include students’ contact details and a presentation title and abstract (max. 150 words).
