About Europe Direct
The EU has many different institutions, legal acts, and regulations, which can generally be difficult to navigate. Europe Direct is a network whose members can help find answers to various questions—that is, they help you stay connected with the EU. Europe Direct centres are located at many European universities and local authorities in order to promote education and research related to the European Union and to support citizens’ awareness, participation, and access to reliable information. The network is managed by the European Commission.
In 1992, the UT Library joined the network of Europe Direct Information Centres as a European Documentation Centre (EDC), with the purpose of providing information and counselling on EU-related subjects and matters. Since July of the same year, the Library has been receiving EU official publications.
From 2026, the University of Tartu Library is one of eight Europe Direct information centres operating in Estonia. Its role is to bring European Union topics closer to people living here, answer citizens’ questions, offer training, organise information events, and support awareness and participation in European debates.
In Estonia, information related to the European Union is provided to every person through the closest and most accessible source possible. In addition to the University of Tartu Library, the Europe Direct network includes documentation centres at the Tallinn University of Technology Library and the National Library of Estonia, as well as seven regional Europe Direct information centres.
European Union communication activities in Estonia are coordinated by the Government Office’s Communication Office and the Representation of the European Commission in Estonia.
