Workshop on spatial history of the Romanov Empire at ZiF, 26-27 May 2025
On 27–28 May, Catherine Gibson co-organised a workshop at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF), Bielefeld University’s Institute for Advanced Study, focused on the history of thematic mapping in the Romanov Empire. The event, co-organised with Anton Kotenko (University of Düsseldorf) and Martin Jeske (Berlin State Library), brought together an interdisciplinary group of scholars from Estonia, Germany, the UK, and the USA.
Over two intensive days, participants engaged in in-depth discussions of draft chapters for a planned collaboratively authored book. The workshop provided a stimulating forum to explore how maps can open up new ways of thinking about the spatial dimensions of 19th-century empires.
We are deeply grateful to ZiF for their generous support, warm hospitality, and for fostering such an inspiring environment for scholarly exchange.
