{"id":10,"date":"2024-04-04T04:50:46","date_gmt":"2024-04-04T01:50:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/zoteroeng\/getting-items-your-zotero-library\/"},"modified":"2024-10-02T10:50:42","modified_gmt":"2024-10-02T07:50:42","slug":"getting-items-your-zotero-library","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/zoteroeng\/getting-items-your-zotero-library\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting items into your Zotero library"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you open the record\u00a0of a book or an article in a database, a small additional icon will appear on the right end of the address bar\u00a0of your web browser.\u00a0By clicking on the icon you can automatically save the record\u00a0of the article or the book into Zotero.\u00a0The icon is different for articles <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"37\" height=\"30\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-35\" title=\"article.png\" src=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/article.png\" alt=\"Article\">, books <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"31\" height=\"31\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-36\" title=\"book.png\" src=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/book.png\" alt=\"book\">and\u00a0web pages <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"38\" height=\"33\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-37\" title=\"website.png\" src=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/website.png\" alt=\"webpage\">. Zotero program must be open and the folder you want to save the record to activated. You can also select\u00a0the folder after clicking on the save icon, as a small box informing you of the saving action will appear below the icon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Downloading items\u00a0from EBSCO Discovery<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1.\u00a0 The easiest way is to download the items from the page of search results. A yellow folder icon\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"25\" height=\"27\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-38\" title=\"folder.png\" src=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/folder.png\" alt=\"Folder icon\"> will appear right from\u00a0the address bar of the search results page. By clicking on it,\u00a0the items\u00a0you have found will be displayed in a list\u00a0so that you can select those that you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"581\" height=\"148\" src=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/zotero_kaust.png\" alt=\"Zotero\" class=\"wp-image-39\" title=\"zotero_kaust.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/zotero_kaust.png 581w, https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/zotero_kaust-300x76.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 581px) 100vw, 581px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Full texts will only be downloaded if they are attached to the article as <em>PDF Full Text<\/em>. To also get the full texts for articles that have them attached as <em>Linked Full Text<\/em>,\u00a0you have to transfer\u00a0the items into Zotero one by one. First, open the record\u00a0you wish to add into Zotero by clicking on its\u00a0title. When you have opened the record, you can see a different icon next to the address bar. By clicking on it, the item will be imported to Zotero. If the linked pdf is not downloaded then either, open the link and save the record to Zotero from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2.\u00a0 To move items\u00a0from the <strong>My EBSCOhost folder<\/strong> into Zotero, first tick the boxes for records you want to transfer and then\u00a0click on <em>Export<\/em> on the right side, select <em>Direct Export in RIS Format<\/em> and then <em>Save <\/em>on the left. The records will be transported directly to your Zotero library or a <em>Delivery<\/em> file will be downloaded. You can move the records to Zotero by clicking on the downloaded file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NB<\/strong>: If you access databases on the library homepage through the link\u00a0<b>Remote access with UT username and password<\/b>, you will be directed to the database through a proxy server, from which the stored URL is unsuitable for citing, as it is not accessible to everyone. Therefore, when saving items in Zotero, prefer a VPN connection, or after adding an item, make sure that there is a DOI in the record information and delete the URL containing the word (ez)proxy from the record information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Based on the book ISBN, or the DOI or PMID or arXiv ID\u00a0numbers of the article<\/strong>, Zotero creates a full record\u00a0in the reference manager. If you cannot download records\u00a0of books and articles straight from the publisher\u2019s home page (the icon will not appear on the address bar),\u00a0click the icon\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-90 size-full\" title=\"isbnikoon.png\" src=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/ikoon2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"27\" height=\"24\"> (Add Item(s) by Identifier) in Zotero. A space appears where you can paste the identifier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"510\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/zotero_isbn.png\" alt=\"Zotero_identifier\" class=\"wp-image-40\" title=\"zotero_isbn.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/zotero_isbn.png 510w, https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/zotero_isbn-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The record of the book or article will automatically be downloaded in Zotero. This method can also be used to import items into Zotero based on the data found in bibliographies or lists of references.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To import <strong>handwritten bibliographies<\/strong>, it is best to use an additional tool. You can copy the bibliography entries to <a href=\"https:\/\/anystyle.io\/\">https:\/\/anystyle.io\/<\/a>, making them readable by\u00a0Zotero. Zotero will automatically attempt to retrieve metadata for PDFs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Metadata from the web page<\/strong> (e.g. blogs, home pages, etc.) can also be saved into Zotero. By clicking on the Zotero entry, you can later find the web page again. If the web page or its address has been changed, the information can still be found with the help of the Snapshot added to the entry. Entries found on web pages can later be supplied by using the Editor with the data which was originally missing (such as the author of the article, the title, year of publication, etc.) if this information can be found somewhere on the web page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Zotero allows you to store and share documents in different formats.<\/b> To add an MS Word or Excel file, click on the <em>Add Attachment<\/em> icon <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-89\" src=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/ikoon.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"36\" height=\"27\"> and select <em>Attach File<\/em>. Find the file on your computer and click <em>Open<\/em>. The file will be saved into Zotero. To add metadata to the file, right-click on the entry and select <em>Create Parent Item<\/em>. Then, you can fill in the fields necessary to describe the file in the <em>Info<\/em> window on the right. The set of descriptive fields can be changed by changing the record type (the uppermost selection on the Info page).
