You are very welcome to attend and get your own creative juices flowing, too!<\/span><\/p>\n

As part of our cultural programme we have organised a virtual cinema with a selection of Estonian films \u2013 and in the spirit of our conference we have chosen adaptations, of course.<\/span><\/p>\n

NOVEMBER<\/strong><\/span><\/span> (Rainer Sarnet, 2017)<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\"November\"\"rehepapp\"<\/p>\n

\u201cNovember\u201d is based on Estonian novel \u201cRehepapp\u201d by Andrus Kivir\u00e4hk (2000), a bestseller of the last twenty years. The film is a mixture of magic, black humor and romantic love. In a poor Estonian village, a group of peasants use magic and folk remedies to survive the winter, and a young woman tries to get a young man to love her.<\/span><\/p>\n

The film was nominated as an Estonian candidate for Foreign Film Oscar and\u00a0has also won several awards for camera work and set design.<\/p>\n

The book has been translated into Finnish\u00a0(Riihiukko eli Marraskuu<\/i>; 2002), Norwegian\u00a0(Trollskap i november<\/i>; 2004), Hungarian\u00a0(\u00d6rd\u00f6ng\u00f6s id\u0151k<\/i>; 2004), Latvian\u00a0(Rijkuris jeb Novembris<\/i>; 2009),\u00a0R<\/a>ussian\u00a0(\u041d\u043e\u044f\u0431\u0440\u044c, \u0438\u043b\u0438 \u0413\u0443\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0449\u0438\u043a<\/i>; 2009) and French\u00a0(Les Groseilles de novembre<\/i>; 2014). It has also been adapted to stage several times.<\/p>\n

On Thursday\u2019s cultural program at 17:30 there will be a discussion on the film November<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

NIPERNAADI<\/strong><\/span><\/span> (Kaljo Kiisk, 1983)<\/span><\/p>\n

The movie is based on a novel (series of short stories)\u00a0by August\u00a0Gailit (1928).\u00a0The story is about an Estonian Don Juan \u2013 Toomas Nipernaadi \u2013, who actually is a writer, who leaves home in spring to stroll around Estonia and is brought home again in autumn.<\/span><\/p>\n

The book has been translated into German (Nippernaht und die Jahreszeiten,\u00a0<\/i>1931), Flemish (1932), Czech (1935), Latvian (1942), Finnish (1942), French(1946), leedu (1971) and Polish (1986 or\u00a01987). Filming rights of the novel were also bought by (unknown) German filmmakers and the filming was supposed to begin in 1932, but\u00a0it seems it did not happen.<\/p>\n

The novel has also been adapted on stage numerous times.<\/p>\n

DEAD MOUNTAINEER\u2019S HOTEL<\/strong><\/span><\/span>\u00a0(Hukkunud Alpinisti hotell<\/em>,\u00a0Grigori Kromanov, 1979)<\/span><\/p>\n

Science-fiction film based on the 1970 novel\u00a0Dead Mountaineer\u2019s Hotel<\/i>\u00a0by\u00a0Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, who also wrote the screenplay.\u00a0Police gets a call-out to a lonely hotel in the Alps. When an officer gets to the hotel everything seems to be alright. Suddenly an avalanche cuts them out from the rest of the world and strange things are going to happen.<\/span><\/p>\n

The novel was originally published in 1970 in Russian, under the title\u00a0\u041e\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c \u00ab\u0423 \u041f\u043e\u0433\u0438\u0431\u0448\u0435\u0433\u043e \u0410\u043b\u044c\u043f\u0438\u043d\u0438\u0441\u0442\u0430\u00bb<\/i>. The book has been translated into English (The Dead Mountaineer\u2019s Inn<\/em>,\u00a02015 and Inspector Glebsky\u2019s Puzzle<\/em>, 1988).\u00a0It has also been staged as radio theatre (2007) and adapted as a video game in 2009.<\/p>\n

BREAKFAST ON THE GRASS <\/strong><\/span><\/span>(Eine murul<\/em>, Priit P\u00e4rn, 1987)<\/span><\/p>\n

In a colorless, totalitarian society, where the basic necessities are scarce, 4 individuals use what they can to fulfill their artistic objective.<\/span><\/p>\n

Priit P\u00e4rn\u2019s films attracted attention with their na\u00efve drawing style and controversy for a perspective on life behind the \u2018iron curtain\u2019 that would have been considered dangerously subversive a decade previously.\u00a0P\u00e4rn managed to sidestep both the Disney-style kiddie cuteness previously prescribed by the government controlled\u00a0Soyuzmultfilm\u00a0studio and the dull preaching of a lot of his contemporaries\u2019 \u2018serious\u2019 political animation.
