Uurimisteema 1: Struktuurse muutuse komponendid tootlikkuse kasvu teguritena siirderiikides

Eesmärk ja uurimisküsimused

Uurimisteema 1 raames uuritakse, milline on struktuurimuutuste seos tootlikkusega Kesk- ja Ida-Euroopa riikides võrreldes muude piirkondadega, nagu Kagu-Aasia, Ladina-Ameerika ja OECD riigid. Majandusarenguga kaasnevad vältimatult struktuurimuutused. Samas struktuurimuutuste mõiste tähendus varieerub mõneti üle erinevate majandusteaduse uurimissuundade. Sageli mõistetakse selle all eelkõige tööjõu ja muude tootmisressursside reallokatsiooni majandusharude vahel (vt nt. McMillan, Rodrik 2011). Uurimisteema raames on kavas näidata vajadust struktuurimuutuste laiema käsitluse järele, nimelt sektorisiseseid struktuurimuutusi on võimalik paremini mõista analüüsides oskuste ja ametialade struktuuris toimuvaid muutusi kui tootlikkuse kasvu tegurit.

Uurimisteema 1 raames käsitletakse niisiis järgmisi uurimisküsimusi:

  1. Milline on sektoritevahelise reallokatsiooni ja sektorisisese tootlikkuse kasvu suhteline panus tootlikkuse kasvu agregeeritud tasandil Kesk- ja Ida-Euroopa riikides võrreldes muude maailma piirkondadega? Milline on erinevate tegurite, sealhulgas otseste välisinvesteeringute, roll selles, et erinevate komponentide osatähtsus varieerub üle riikide?
  2. Kuidas eristada oskuste paranemist kui struktuurimuutuste komponenti sektorisisese tootlikkuse kasvu komponendist?
  3. Kuidas erinevad struktuurimuutuste komponendid on seotud institutsionaalsete teguritega makrotasemel?
  4. Kuidas ametialane, geograafiline ja sektoritevaheline tööjõu mobiilsus mõjutab tootlikkust nii ettevõtte kui agregeeritud tasandil?

Urmas Varblane

Foreign direct investments, national innovation systems, knowledge transfer, cross cultural differences in international business

Biography: 
Urmas Varblane (1961) is the head of the chair of international entrepreneurship and innovation in the University of Tartu. His research interests include the role of foreign direct investments in the knowledge transfer in transition economies, innovation systems of small countries, economic convergence and structural change, cross cultural differences and internationalisation of firms.

He has published in journals International Journal of Manpower ,International Journal of Cross Cultural Management, Eastern European Economics  among others .See more at Estonian Research Information System

He has participated in various EU, Nordic and Estonian research projects. In the current project he is responsible for the overall coordination of the project and conducts research in the WP1 about the role of structural change in the productivity growth. 

 

Jaan Masso

Senior Research Fellow, School of Economics and Business Administration, University of Tartu, Estonia

Biography:
Jaan Masso (1975) is a senior research fellow at the University of Tartu, Estonia. His main research areas are labour economics (labour demand, wages, labour market flows, labour market of scientists, firm demographics), foreign direct investments, innovations, science policy.

His publications include articles in Scientometrics, Journal of Comparative Economics, European Journal of Industrial Relations, Economics of Transition, Eastern European Economics, etc. See more at Estonian Research Information System

He has participated in various national and international research projects (EU, ILO, World Bank, OECD). In the current project he coordinates studies under WP1 and conducts research on the changes firms’ export markets and product portfolios, and the knowledge transfer through labour mobility based on micro-data from Estonia.

 

Uku Varblane

PhD Student, School of Economics and Business Administration, University of Tartu, Estonia

Firm performance, exporting and value chain analysis

Biography: 
Uku Varblane (1986)  is a PhD Student at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration and Programme Manager-Analyst at the Centre for Applied Social Sciences at the University of Tartu. His research fields are related to firm performance and FDI. In particular, he is focusing on the linkages of value chain and firm performace.

Dr Tiiu Paas Dr. Raul Eamets

Tiiu Paas

Biography: 
Tiiu Paas (1949) is a professor of econometrics at the University of Tartu, Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, in Estonia. She has also worked as the head of the Institute of Economics and Vice Dean of the Faculty.

Her recent research activities cover topics in regional disparities and development, international labour mobility and attitudes to immigration, labour productivity and structural change. She is the editor, co-editor, author and co-author of several books and articles. See more at Estonian Research Information System. In 2009 she received Estonian National Science Award in Social Science.

She has been involved in several international and national research projects and worked as an expert for evaluation of national and EU projects and study programs. In the current project  she is involved in analysing cross-country and regional disparities in sectoral structure and productivity and the role of diverse human capital in explaining these disparities (in general WP 1). 

 

Nataliia Ostapenko

Biography:

Nataliia Ostapenko (1988) is a Junior Research Fellow of Applied Econometrics, School of Economics and Business Administration, University of Tartu.

Her research interests include Institutions and economic growth; Informal institutions and entrepreneurship outcomes; Tax evasion and the informal economy.

Raul Eamets

Biography: 
Raul Eamets (1964) is  the head of the chair of economics . Since 2014 he is a Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration.

In research R. Eamets focuses to labour market issues, but also in the area of general macroeconomic developments in Baltic countries. His main research areas are: education and labour markets, labour market flexibility and flexicurity, labour market flows, migration, wage gap, general issuses of  employment and unemployment in Baltic countries. All together he has about 150 academic publications. His publications include articles in European Journal of Industrial Relations, Energy Policy, International Journal of Manpower, Post-communist studies, Baltic Journal of Economics and Baltic Journal of Management among others. All together he has been or he is in 30 international projects as Estonian partner or expert.

From 2004 to 2009 he was a member of the (Supervisory) Board of the Bank of Estonia. Since 2014 he is a head of Estonian Fiscal Council. He is also Director of PhD  School in Economics and Innovation Studies.

In the project he conducts research in the WP1 about the role of structural change in the productivity growth.
