groups based on their identities, and 2) explain the reasons and rationale behind joining in given groups\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<h4>\n\tStage 1: Group Negotiation\u00a0<br>\n<\/h4>\n<p style=\"margin-right:0in;margin-left:0in;margin-bottom:12pt\">\n\t<span><span style=\",serif\"><span><span style=\"serif\">All students begin speaking to one another,\u00a0listening\u00a0to each other and exchanging\u00a0personal information to make decisions about identity. Students\u00a0introduce\u00a0themselves, and more confident students often initiated exchanges. Through cobversations, students can form and reform groups, negotiating and deciding on the rationale behind forming groups.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"margin-right:0in;margin-left:0in;margin-bottom:12pt\">\n\t<span><span style=\",serif\"><span><span style=\"serif\">Stage 2: Groups and Identities\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><br>\n<\/h4>\n<p style=\"margin-right:0in;margin-left:0in;margin-bottom:12pt\">\n\t<span><span style=\",serif\"><span><span style=\"serif\">At the end of the sorting process, once students\u00a0form\u00a0their groups, they have to negotiate\u00a0how to explain their grouping to the rest of the class. Students may find different characteristics as key to their identity, such as politics, religion, traditions, ethnicity or other. Every time the rationale of forming a group is named, it is an opportunity for critical discussion about the term and about the importance of inclusive learning.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"margin-right:0in;margin-left:0in;margin-bottom:12pt\">\n\t<span><span style=\",serif\"><span><span style=\"serif\">Stage 3: Reflection\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><br>\n<\/h4>\n<p style=\"margin-right:0in;margin-left:0in;margin-bottom:12pt\">\n\t<span><span style=\",serif\"><span><span style=\"serif\">This\u00a0activity\u00a0not only facilitates\u00a0students speaking and listening to each other, but also helps recognize\u00a0diversity in the classroom and the importance of inclusivity. Students\u00a0exchange\u00a0personal information, understand one another, and\u00a0form meaningful relationships. In other words, this task helps students learn\u00a0through the exchange of experiences, thus benefitting from their diverse classroom experience.
