SAPHA

The largest output, named as “Development of the SAPHA-course”, will create
SAPHA-course contents and outlines. The whole development process will strengthen the skills and
knowledge of the HEI staff in health care sector, in the field of ergonomics and, increase the skills in
patient handling in safe and rehabilitating way.

The SAPHA-course itself will raise the quality of patient handling and ergonomics education in health care in participating HEIs. As the SAPHA course method is based on multiple and variable pedagogic methods, such as flipped learning,
learning-by-doing, simulations and InnoPeda®-methodology, it will introduce novel pedagogic  solutions to the ergonomic education.

The last section of the practical part of SAPHA-course consist of work-life project, where the students are teaching and guiding the safe and rehabilitating patient handling to already qualified health care professionals. The skills of teaching and guiding patient handling in safe and rehabilitating way is often requirement for example physiotherapy students.

As a short-term impact, SAPHA course will enhance the skills of health care students and HEI staff, and in addition has an impact on the professionals in the clinical placements. The long-term results of IO 2 will lead to increased student exchange, as the participating HEIs are able to offer more international courses on regular basis. Increased student exchange will support those future professionals for the staff mobility in long run in Europe.

This product will equalize and unify patient handling in participating HEI, offer a channel to increase workplace safety and facilitate the utilization of full rehabilitation potential the patients have. The SAPHA-course will not only fit into curricula of Bachelor level studies but may also be offered as further training for professionals in working life. As a result, this IO produces additional business possibilities to participating HEIs, and also for other European HEIs as the product can be developed used by Handbook.

    International course

RENE aims to develop and standardize an international course on patient handling and promotes international studies

The RENE project is set to improve and unify the education on patient handling in the health care sector. Workplace safety issues and the use of risk management tools, proper communication with the patient and the knowhow and skills on correct handling techniques are central in managing patient handling in changing environments and situations.

According to national and international statistics, the healthcare staff has a very high risk of musculoskeletal disorders, derived mainly from poor manual patient handling practices. This highlights the need for proper focus on patient handling already in Bachelor level studies.

The project aims to develop and standardize an international course on patient handling and promotes internationalization of health care students. One of the aims is also to raise awareness of patient handling in a safe and rehabilitating way in the field of health care.

The RENE project is based on three phases;

  1. ‘Analysing the conditions’, which will work as a basis for the second phase
  2. ‘Developing the SAPHA course’ (SAPHA – Patient handling in a safe and rehabilitating way), and the
  3. ‘Handbook’, which will be designed to support the practical implementation of the developed course and is directed at teachers. The handbook (printed and especially the e-version) will act as a tool for sustainability, ensuring that the project’s results remain available after the project has ended.

The RENE team has been working hard the last three years but the results are now here! Both the SAPHA course materials and the handbook can be found on our page for free! Just click on the menu and download the files!

For the SAPHA course, we have added some directions on how to use the course, either as an Moodle user or other platform.

It has been a great project and we are happy to present the outcomes. We would like to thank all our partners, all our collages and students who have helped along the way.
