More then 400 participants joined\u00a0the largest forum of Orthodox scholars in the world.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#b22222\"><strong>Irina Paert<\/strong><\/span> presented a paper \u201c\u2018May All Our Enemies Be Struck with Terror\u2019: How Do Orthodox Christians Pray for Peace in the Year 2022?\u201d at the session \u201cTeaching and Praying Orthodoxy on the Basis of the Patristic Sources in Modern Slavic Theology.\u201d She also recorded a lecture in the series \u201cIOTA Talks\u201c on Orthodox conciliarity. And moderated two sessions.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#b22222\"><strong>Alison Kolosova<\/strong><\/span> presented a paper\u00a0\u201cLimits of Inculturation: Nikolai Ilminskii\u2019s Missionary Vision and Its Implementation in Late 19th\/Early 20th Century Russia\u201d at the session \u201cSlavic Orthodoxy and Mission, 19th-20th c.\u201d She also gave an IOTA Talk on the Orthodox mission today.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#b22222\"><strong>Andrey Shishkov<\/strong><\/span> presented a paper \u201cGod, Grace, and Object-Oriented Approach\u201d at the session \u201cPhilosophical Theology as a Pattern for Metaphysical Speculation.\u201d. Participants:<strong>\u00a0Liliya Berezhnaya<\/strong> (University of M\u00fcnster),\u00a0<strong>Catherine Gibson<\/strong> (University of Tartu),\u00a0<span style=\"color:#b22222\"><strong>Irina Paert<\/strong><\/span> (University of Tartu),\u00a0<strong>Darius Stali\u016bnas<\/strong> (Institute for Lithuanian History),\u00a0<strong>James A. Kapal\u00f3<\/strong> (University College Cork).\u00a0<span style=\"color:#b22222\"><strong>Andrey Shishkov<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0served as a moderator.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe Forum includes five articles that address the problem of emerging collective identity through the entanglement of complementing and conflicting forms of groupness: religious, political, and ethnic. He told about the role of Patriarch Kirill in supporting the Russian invasion of Ukraine.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/475\/shishkov_helsinki_.jpeg\" style=\"margin: 3px;width: 600px;height: 493px\">\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u2013 On 22 October Orthodoxy as Solidarity\u00a0project organized a colloquium\u00a0\u201cSobornost, Solidarity and Humanity\u201d in the framework of the conference <a data-url=\"https:\/\/konverents.pjk.ee\/program\" href=\"https:\/\/konverents.pjk.ee\/program\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cTo Be Human: New Approach to Life and Education in Times of Crisis\u201d<\/a> (Tallinn, 20-22 October 2022). In the colloquium took part prominent Orthodox and Ecumenical\u00a0scholars \u2013 <strong>Fr. John Behr <\/strong>(University of Aberdine), <strong><span style=\"color:#b22222\">Irina Paert<\/span><\/strong> (University of Tartu),\u00a0<strong>Davor D\u017ealto<\/strong> (Stokholm University College),<strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#b22222\">Alison Kolosova<\/span> <\/strong>(University of Tartu),\u00a0<strong>Sr.\u00a0Vassa Larin<\/strong> (ROCOR), <strong>Br. Adalberto Mainardi<\/strong> (Monastic Community of Bose),\u00a0<strong>Natallia Vasilevich<\/strong> (University of Bohn), and\u00a0<strong>Ljubov Kisseljova<\/strong>\u00a0(University of Tartu). <span style=\"color:#b22222\"><strong>Andrey Shishkov<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0served as a moderator of the\u00a0event.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/475\/colloquium_tallinn_1.jpeg\" style=\"margin: 3px;width: 600px;height: 425px\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/475\/colloquium_tallinn_2.jpeg\" style=\"margin: 3px;width: 600px;height: 422px\">\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u2013\u00a0<span style=\"color:#b22222\"><strong>Alison Kolosova<\/strong><\/span> was a co-organiser of the conference <a data-url=\"https:\/\/mnimi-protoporia.com\/african-soundscapes-pics-and-videos\/\" href=\"https:\/\/mnimi-protoporia.com\/african-soundscapes-pics-and-videos\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cAfrican Soundscapes: Theological, Anthropological and Legal Approaches\u201d <\/a>at the Department of Social Theology and the Study of Religion, University of Athens, 11-12 October 2022.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u2013 <strong><span style=\"color:#b22222\">Irina Paert<\/span><\/strong> presented a paper to the conference \u201cEthnic relations in the Baltic reconsidered\u201d that took place on 16-17 September at Yale McMillan Centre.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/475\/fdkfo1-waaafcwr.jpeg\" style=\"margin: 3px;width: 600px;height: 411px\">\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u2013 On 13 September, two members of the project <span style=\"color:#b22222\"><strong>Andrey Shishkov <\/strong><\/span>and<span style=\"color:#b22222\"><strong> Irina Paert <\/strong><\/span>participated\u00a0at\u00a0the international conference <a data-url=\"https:\/\/usuteaduskond.ut.ee\/en\/content\/international-conference-adolf-von-harnack-bridging-gaps\" href=\"https:\/\/usuteaduskond.ut.ee\/en\/content\/international-conference-adolf-von-harnack-bridging-gaps\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cAdolf von Harnack: bridging the gaps\u201d\u00a0<\/a>that took place on 12-13 September at the University of Tartu, organized by the member of the project<strong><span style=\"color:#b22222\"> Priit Rohtmets<\/span><\/strong>. They have presented a paper \u2018\u201cIt is not true that Germany is guilty\u00a0of\u00a0having caused this war\u201d: Adolf von Harnack, war and the responsibility of intellectuals. Some reflections on the past and present.\u2019 Paper analysed\u00a0<em>Manifesto 93<\/em>, a collective declaration signed by 93 German intellectuals (A. v. Harnack among them) in support of the German invasion of Belgium in 1914 and compared it with reaction of Russian scholars on the invasion in Ukraine in 2022.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/475\/fcm-bh3wyaqshcq.jpeg\" style=\"margin: 3px;width: 600px;height: 347px\">\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u2013\u00a0On June 27\u201329, the project participants gathered in P\u00e4rdi on Saaremaa for the BootCamp to discuss our research and plan further actions. Fruitful discussions continued with a one-day tour of the Orthodox churches of Saaremaa and finished in Kuressaare.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/475\/fwcmuvuxeauvie5.jpeg\" style=\"width: 500px;height: 247px;margin: 3px\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/475\/img_4266.jpg\" style=\"width: 500px;height: 391px;margin: 3px\">\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u2013 On 12-14\u00a0June, two members of the project participated in the 6th Annual Tartu Conference on Russian and East European Studies:\u00a0<span style=\"color:#b22222\"><strong>Catherine Gibson\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>chaired a panel on \u201cRestoration of Lithuanian Independence Revisited\u201d and\u00a0<span style=\"color:#b22222\"><strong>Andrey Shishkov<\/strong><\/span> participated as a discussant in the section \u201cReligion, Politics and Society\u201d.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u2013 The first issue of SALT,\u00a0a new journal of Orthodox intercultural theology, dialogue and mission, has been published.\u00a0<span style=\"color:#b22222\"><strong>Alison Kolosova<\/strong> <\/span>is Assistant Editor of the journal and has published an article \u2018Christendom Cracking at the Seams: Indigeneity, Conciliarity and Catholicity at the Kazan 1910 Missionary Conference\u2019 in the first issue. She also contributed two book reviews to the journal. <a href=\"https:\/\/saltalas.com\/salt-issues-p\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Salt \u0399ssues \u2013 She presented a paper entitled: \u201cZooming in and out on religion, language, and nationality: Census-taking and questions of scale in the Baltic provinces\u201d. Her participation in the event was supported by a travel grant from the <a data-url=\"https:\/\/aabs-balticstudies.org\/\" href=\"https:\/\/aabs-balticstudies.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies<\/a>\u00a0(AABS). After the conference, Catherine also wrote a short reflection about the event which was published on the AABS website\u00a0<a data-url=\"https:\/\/aabs-balticstudies.org\/2021\/09\/21\/aabs-travel-grant-recipients-share-their-experiences-of-cbse-2021-part-1\/\u00a0\" href=\"https:\/\/aabs-balticstudies.org\/2021\/09\/21\/aabs-travel-grant-recipients-share-their-experiences-of-cbse-2021-part-1\/%C2%A0\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u2013 On 18-20 July<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>project members based in Estonia gathered for three days in the village of Nina on the shore of lake Peipsi for a \u201cBootcamp\u201d. After months of Zoom meetings, we enjoyed being able to meet in person to discuss our research and\u00a0future plans for the project, as well as to tour local Orthodox churches in Nina and Varnja and the Old Believer prayer house in Varnja. We\u00a0sampled the local cuisine at the Old Believer Onion and Fish Restaurant in Kolkja and grilled in the evening at the Nina Kordon Guesthouse. He masterfully charts the ways in which non-local and local religious, civic, and government leaders combined resources and created Orthodox religious networks throughout the empire and abroad to transform a backwater diocese into a prominent Russian Orthodox site that began to compete successfully with institutions of Lithuanian German Lutheranism and German civilization prior to the onset of World War I. The article constitutes a major contribution to the histories of religion, regional developments, and empire-building and russification within the imperial realm as well as global
