Skytte Institute\u2019s website (June 16th)\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe end of the Spring semester marks almost one year since the start of the Jean Monnet Module \u201cNeighbourhood Enlargement and Regionalism in Europe\u201d (NearEU) related to Europeanization of the European Union\u2019s Eastern neighbourhood, candidate countries, and wider Europe funded by the Erasmus+ Jean Monnet programme.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00a0The project is coordinated by the University of Tartu and led by Dr. Stefano Braghiroli \u2013 Associate Professor of European Studies and Director of the Master\u2019s Programme in \u201cEuropean Union \u2013 Russia Studies\u201d \u2013 and Ms. Anna Beitane \u2013 Manager of Online Learning Projects at the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies. It includes a network of partners from Albania, Armenia, Belarus, Montenegro, Poland, and Ukraine. Particular attention is devoted to the involvement of junior instructors and early stage researchers.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe module aims to create <strong>new knowledge, tools, and resources related to the evolution of partners\u2019 and candidates\u2019 relationship with the EU and alternative models of regionalism<\/strong>. NearEU is functional to the creation and the support of the new \u201cEuropean Union \u2013 Russia Studies\u201d module within the framework of the master\u2019s programme in \u201cInternational relations and regional studies\u201d at the J. Skytte Institute of Political Studies.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tDespite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic all the activities planned for this year have been launched, conducted, and successfully implemented.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn particular,\u00a0<a data-url=\"https:\/\/neareu.ut.ee\/blog\/jean-monnet-module-neareu-offers-two-new-courses-spring-semester-2021\" href=\"https:\/\/neareu.ut.ee\/blog\/jean-monnet-module-neareu-offers-two-new-courses-spring-semester-2021\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">two new courses<\/a>\u00a0have been developed and offered to students for the first time, namely \u201cIlliberal Turn in Europe and Russia\u201d (6 ECTS) and \u201cEU Enlargement and the Challenges of Wider Europe\u201d (6 ECTS). The courses attracted more than 50 students, in total, and were offered in hybrid mode, thereby allowing in-class as well as remote participation. The two courses provided the students with up-to-date knowledge of actors, factors, and trends that affect institutional and political developments in the context of Europe and Eurasia. Within the framework of the courses, guest lectures were given by the module\u2019s partnering experts.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tA\u00a0<strong>new 6-week MOOC<\/strong>\u00a0on \u201c<a data-url=\"https:\/\/neareu.ut.ee\/blog\/neareu-jean-monnet-module-launches-new-mooc-common-challenges-competing-regionalisms\" href=\"https:\/\/neareu.ut.ee\/blog\/neareu-jean-monnet-module-launches-new-mooc-common-challenges-competing-regionalisms\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Common Challenges of Competing Regionalisms<\/a>\u201d (2 ECTS) was designed and launched in April 2021. The course included video-lectures and interactive multimedia material by in-house Skytte staff and partnering experts of the module. The course attracted more than 550 participants from all around the world. It provided students with a practical toolkit to understand dynamics and trajectories in the field of comparative regionalism and integration processes in Europe and Eurasia.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe module also successfully launched the\u00a0<strong>NearEU MasterClass series.<\/strong>\u00a0The events are aimed to favour public discussion awareness and debate in the light of practitioners and leading scholars\u2019 first-hand experience. During the Spring semester, four MasterClasses were held hosting <a data-url=\"https:\/\/neareu.ut.ee\/blog\/neareu-module-kicks-its-first-master-class-pulitzer-prize-winner-journalist-michael\" href=\"https:\/\/neareu.ut.ee\/blog\/neareu-module-kicks-its-first-master-class-pulitzer-prize-winner-journalist-michael\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Mr. Michael Hudson<\/a> (investigative Pulitzer-prize winner journalist), <a data-url=\"https:\/\/neareu.ut.ee\/blog\/neareu-module-continues-its-master-class-series-partnering-expert-r-andriy-tyushka\" href=\"https:\/\/neareu.ut.ee\/blog\/neareu-module-continues-its-master-class-series-partnering-expert-r-andriy-tyushka\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Andriy Tyushka<\/a> (College of Europe, Natolin), <a data-url=\"https:\/\/neareu.ut.ee\/blog\/third-neareu-master-class-focused-situation-belarus\" href=\"https:\/\/neareu.ut.ee\/blog\/third-neareu-master-class-focused-situation-belarus\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Mr. Christopher Forst<\/a> (Director of Friederich Ebert Stiftung \u2013 Belarus), and <a data-url=\"https:\/\/neareu.ut.ee\/blog\/master-class-series-spring-semester-were-concluded-he-ambassador-archil-karaulashvili\" href=\"https:\/\/neareu.ut.ee\/blog\/master-class-series-spring-semester-were-concluded-he-ambassador-archil-karaulashvili\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Amb. Archil Karaulashvili <\/a>(Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to the Republic of Estonia). The events attracted more than 300 people in total.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn late May, the first\u00a0<a data-url=\"https:\/\/neareu.ut.ee\/blog\/neareu-module-successfully-launched-its-first-graduate-conference\" href=\"https:\/\/neareu.ut.ee\/blog\/neareu-module-successfully-launched-its-first-graduate-conference\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">NearEU Graduate Conference<\/a>\u00a0was held at the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies. The Conference provided final-year Master\u2019s students with the opportunity to present their works in the format of an academic conference and receive specialized feedback from fellows, faculty staff, and doctoral students. In total 15 submissions were received and the winner of the Conference\u2019s best-paper award was chosen. In line with the multi-disciplinary, diverse, and plural nature of the event, presentations ranged from international relations and European studies to cyber security and media studies.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe activities of the module, in the Spring semester, were finalized with<strong>\u00a0a <\/strong><a data-url=\"https:\/\/neareu.ut.ee\/blog\/neareu-conducts-its-first-eastern-partnership-summit-simulation-exercise\" href=\"https:\/\/neareu.ut.ee\/blog\/neareu-conducts-its-first-eastern-partnership-summit-simulation-exercise\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">2-day simulation <\/a><strong>of decision-making of the Council of the EU and of the Eastern Partnership Summit<\/strong>\u00a0discussing, respectively, the situation in Belarus and the future of the Eastern Neighbourhood. More than 40 participants were involved in the role game of EU decision-making.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn the words of the module\u2019s coordinators \u2013 Stefano Braghiroli and Anna Beitane \u2013 \u201cthis first year has proven that despite these challenging times we have been able to offer a diverse set of activities and tools to students profiting from the module and to successfully coordinate and cooperate with our partnering experts.
