{"id":12,"date":"2024-04-04T04:39:21","date_gmt":"2024-04-04T01:39:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/mobvet\/reflection-exercises\/"},"modified":"2024-04-04T04:41:40","modified_gmt":"2024-04-04T01:41:40","slug":"reflection-exercises","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/mobvet\/reflection-exercises\/","title":{"rendered":"Reflection exercises"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\tIn this chapter, you can find some exercises for critical reflection.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000080\"><strong>Reflection exersise 1: Interview<\/strong><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\">When you study or facilitate learning in an educational institution in a foreign country, you can directly experience the context where your colleagues or fellow students work and learn about it as you interact with others. This interview lets you have a closer look at the context where you work. You can stop for a while and focus on the issues you encounter and view them from angles that may not be present in an everyday discussion. <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\">In addition to getting information on the context, you will have a chance to discuss your observations and thoughts with somebody who knows the context. The discussion may also trigger new questions afterwards and deepen your learning.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\">Please focus on the educational context and facilitating learning in that context. You can also include aspects of everyday life in your interview.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\">What to do<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n\t\t<b><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\">Prepare for the interview<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\"> by creating questions you want to explore. See examples of themes to explore in section <i>Suggestions for the themes of the interview<\/i> below. <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<b><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\">Interview<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\"> someone who knows the educational context and teacher\u2019s work well. You can interview two or more people at the same time to encourage discussion. The interviewees can be, for example, teachers, study counsellors, special education teachers or heads of department. <b>Record <\/b>the interview or <b>take notes<\/b> for your analysis.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<b><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\">Compile a report<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\"> of your main findings. Interpret the findings by connecting them to the theoretical background.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\n\t<em><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\">Suggestions for the themes of the interview <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\">Please focus on issues concerning facilitating learning, studying and working in the educational institution as well as the learning environment. However, you do not have to strictly distinguish between working\/studying and free time \u2013 you can include questions about everyday life. Below are examples of themes concerning the educational context that you can explore in your interview:<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\t<span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\">The roles of a teacher and student and the relationship between them.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\">Characteristics of a good teacher and student.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\">Teacher\u2019s autonomy.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\">Guidance \u2013 for example, who guides, who initiates interaction.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\">Learning goals \u2013 for example, whose is responsible for setting a student\u2019s learning goals, competences.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\">Learning activities \u2013\u00a0for example, types of learning activities and where they are done.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\">Assessment and feedback \u2013\u00a0for example, assessment criteria, assessment material, assessment decision, peer feedback.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\">Recognition of prior learning.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\">Interaction and working with peers.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\">Diverse learners and diversity.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\t<span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:black\">Consider also the following questions: <\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\">Can you see similarities between this context and your context? Can you see differences? Think about your approach to learning and your ways of working with students. Did you learn something new about them from the interview or its analysis? Did your approach develop?<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000080\"><strong>Reflection exersise 2: Exploring cultural encounter<\/strong><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe purpose of this assignment is to reflect on a cultural encounter you have experienced together with people from the local community. The aim is not only to learn from this particular cultural encounter but also to learn a method you can use for critical reflection. The method used in this learning task is based on the DIVER model for critical reflection proposed by Jones, P\u00a0<i>et al<\/i>. 2019.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\">What to do?<\/span><\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span><span style=\"line-height:107%\">Start by reading about reflection and exploring the background of the DIVER model in <\/span><\/span><a data-url=\"https:\/\/open.umn.edu\/opentextbooks\/textbooks\/intercultural-learning-critical-preparation-for-international-student-travel \" href=\"https:\/\/open.umn.edu\/opentextbooks\/textbooks\/intercultural-learning-critical-preparation-for-international-student-travel%20\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Module 4 Critical reflection and culture in Jones, P\u00a0et al. 2019<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span><span style=\"line-height:107%\">Now think about the cultural encounters you have had during your study abroad week. Reflect on one of the incidents or a discussions where you think culture and cultural differences played a role together with people from the local community. Using a DIVER model (see chapter <\/span><\/span><a data-url=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/mobvet\/tools-reflection\" href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/mobvet\/tools-reflection\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Tools for reflection<\/a><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\">):<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n\t\t<b><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\">Describe<\/span><\/span><\/b><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"> the incident or discussion in detail.\u00a0 Try not to interpret or judge \u2013 describe what happened or what you heard.<\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<b><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\">Interpret<\/span><\/span><\/b><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"> your description by writing or recording what you think about it. Have a look at your interpretation. What does it tell you about the things that are important to you and that you pay attention to?<\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<b><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\">Verify<\/span><\/span><\/b><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"> your interpretation with local people such as you colleagues or fellow students. Ask them questions that help you investigate your interpretation and assumptions. <\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<b><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\">Explain<\/span><\/span><\/b><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"> your understanding of the incident or discussion drawing on the theoretical background discussed in chapter <\/span><\/span><a data-url=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/mobvet\/content-and-benefits-reflection\" href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/mobvet\/content-and-benefits-reflection\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Content and benefits for reflection<\/a><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\">. Consider also your original interpretation: what do the words you have used in it reveal about your perspective? What assumptions can you notice in your interpretation? Where do you think they come from? What does your interpretation tell you about the knowledge base do you draw on? What does it reveal about your values and beliefs?<\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<b><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\">Write<\/span><\/span><\/b><span><span style=\"line-height:107%\"> about your understanding of the event.<\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\n\t<span><span style=\"line-height:107%\">This task is adapted from <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:black\">Jones, P <em>et.al<\/em>. 2019.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000080\"><strong>Reflection exersise 3: What I have learned this week?<\/strong><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tUse a notebook, digital journal, sketchbook, an App such as Notes or Pages or a journaling App such as Day One, Diaro or Momento,\u00a0keep a weekly journal. Questions to reflect each week:\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>Version A<\/em>\n<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n\t\tWhat have I learned from the new experiences (both positive and negative)?\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tHow did I adapt to new situations? How did I interact with others?\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tWhat challenges and opportunities I encountered? How did I deal them?
