XII Finnish Ethnology Days <strong>14.-15.3<\/strong>.2024.<\/p>\n<h2>2023<\/h2>\n<h3>MNEMUS in Vabamu<\/h3>\n<p>From\u00a0<strong>June 9, 2023<\/strong>, as a part of our project\u2019s public outreach, a new audio journey opened at Museum of Occupations and Freedom Vabamu\u2019s permanent exhibition titled\u00a0<strong><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/vabamu.ee\/what-s-on\/news\/from-such-people-to-lgbt-activism?fbclid=IwAR1OiCxE_e2fIn__cmHZIzlrgGIvc7p4sRQkTYpmIjyiIGXuD-uaQDotGd8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">From\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><strong><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/vabamu.ee\/what-s-on\/news\/from-such-people-to-lgbt-activism?fbclid=IwAR1OiCxE_e2fIn__cmHZIzlrgGIvc7p4sRQkTYpmIjyiIGXuD-uaQDotGd8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201csuch people\u201d to LGBT activism. Stories from sexual and gender minorities in the 20th century Estonia<\/a><strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The curator of the new audio journey is Rebeka P\u00f5ldsam, a doctoral student in ethnology at the University of Tartu. The new audio guide layer guides the exhibition visitor through the Vabamu permanent exhibition, drawing attention to some new and some old objects that help understand Estonia\u2019s LGBT history.<\/p>\n<h3>Conference\u00a0Post\/Socialist Memory Cultures in Transition<\/h3>\n<p><strong>On Sept 20-23, 2023\u00a0<\/strong>the international conference\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/konverentsikeskus.tlu.ee\/en\/2nd-posocomes-conference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Post-Socialist Memory Cultures in Transition\u00a0<\/a>took place\u00a0in Tallinn, co-organized by our project team.<\/p>\n<p>The aim of the conference was\u00a0to study the changes in post-socialist, especially Eastern, Central and South-East European memory cultures, which have emerged as a result of transnational, regional, national and local tensions and interactions, and have received a new direction since Russia\u2019s war of aggression in Ukraine. One of the common themes of the conference was\u00a0\u201cMnemonic pluralism and critical dialogue in museums\u201d. In five panels discussing museum and memory work, researchers and museum workers from Ukraine, Poland, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, the Netherlands and Estonia presented their research. A separate panel was devoted to the vulnerability and preservation of Ukrainian cultural heritage in war conditions. One of the plenary speakers at the conference was Erica Lehrer from Concordia University.<\/p>\n<p>As the final event of the conference we initiated a discussion centred around Vabamu\u2019s new audio journey \u201cFrom \u2018Such People\u2019 to LGBT Activism\u201d. We visited several exhibitions both with and without a guide, documented certain exhibitions, and interviewed the staff managing collections and exhibitions, also heads of the museums. We were kindly welcomed at the Latvian Ethnographic Open Air Museum, Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, Tukums Museum, National History Museum, Latvian War Museum and Latvians Abroad \u2013 museum and research center.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/mnemus\/galleries\/l%C3%A4ti-v%C3%A4lit%C3%B6%C3%B6d2022fieldwork-latvia?admin_panel=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-url=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/mnemus\/galleries\/l%C3%A4ti-v%C3%A4lit%C3%B6%C3%B6d2022fieldwork-latvia?admin_panel=1\">Picture Gallery of the Latvia\u2019s Fieldwork<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On <strong>June 27- July 1,<\/strong> 2022,\u00a0Linara Dovydaityte, Kirsti J\u00f5esalu and Terje Anepaio conducted fieldwork in <strong>Tallinn<\/strong> and <strong>Ida-Virumaa<\/strong>. They visited Estonian Open Air museum and Patarei prison museum, in Tallinn, and Sillam\u00e4e museum, Kohtla-N\u00f5mme Mining Museum and Kreenholm factory in Ida-Virumaa.<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>February 8-10,<\/strong> 2022, Ene K\u00f5resaar and Kirsti J\u00f5esalu conducted fieldwork in <strong>Vilnius<\/strong>, <strong>Lithuania<\/strong>. The main aim was to visit and document the <em>Homo Sovieticus<\/em> exhibition opened at the end of 2021 in the Tuskulenai Memorial Park in Vilnius.<\/p>\n<h3>Presentations in 2022<\/h3>\n<p>On\u00a0<strong>1-2\u00a0December\u00a02022,<\/strong>\u00a0 the 8th international symposium of the Finnish Oral History Network (FOHN) \u2013\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.helsinki.fi\/en\/conferences\/8th-international-symposium-finnish-oral-history-network-fohn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AFTER: Time, Place &amp; (Dis)Connections in Oral History &amp; Life Storying<\/a>\u00a0took place at the University of\u00a0Helsinki.\u00a0<strong>Terje Anepaio, Kirsti J\u00f5esalu<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Jana Reidla<\/strong>\u00a0presented a paper \u201cDistant and familiar: researching colleagues in the Baltic history museums\u201d on 1 December in the session\u00a0(Dis)connections in Oral History Interview: Thinking of Time, Language, and Intersubjectivity.<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0<strong>13-14 October 2022<\/strong>,\u00a0the\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/msanordic2022.hi.is\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MSA Nordic 2022 Conference<\/a>\u00a0in collaboration with The Centre for Studies in Memory and Literature Explorations in Counter-Memory, Reykjavik, Iceland. <strong>Ene K\u00f5resaar<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Kirsti J\u00f5esalu<\/strong>\u00a0presented a paper \u201cCounter-Memory as \u2018Another Kind of Responsibility\u2019: Baltic Museums\u2019 Negotiations with the Post-Communist Memory Regime\u201d. See the\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/msanordic2022.hi.is\/?page_id=46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Programme<\/a>\u00a0here.<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0<strong>19-21 October 2022<\/strong>, the conference \u201e<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/evm.ee\/visitors\/conference-recent-history-and-its-untold-stories-in-open-air-museums\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Recent history and its untold stories in open-air museums<\/a>\u201d took place\u00a0at the Estonian Open Air Museum in Tallinn.\u00a0<strong>Ene K\u00f5resaar<\/strong>\u00a0delivered a keynote speech \u201cMuseum making memories with life stories: (How) Does it work?\u201d on 20 October.<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>September 2<\/strong>, 2022, <strong>Jana Reidla<\/strong> and <strong>Ene K\u00f5resaar<\/strong> presented a paper \u201cBetween \u2018Heritage\u2019 and \u2018Stuff\u2019: On the Function of Auxiliary Collections in Estonian Museums\u201d at the SIEF Museums and Material Culture Working Group webinar <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.siefhome.org\/wg\/mus\/events\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.siefhome.org\/wg\/mus\/events\">\u201c(In-)significant stuff. On the Politics of Renaming the Estonian Museum of Occupations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>On<strong> March 8<\/strong>, 2022, at the research seminar of the Estonian National Museum,\u00a0<strong>Ene K\u00f5resaar<\/strong> and <strong>Kirsti J\u00f5esalu<\/strong> talked on a topic\u00a0<strong>Museum from the point of view of a memory researcher: contradictory subject positions in the exhibition<\/strong>. They introduced the MNEMUS project, discussed the possibility of analyzing the interpretation of 20th century in exhibitions in a combination of memory theories and the methodology of social positioning. As an example, they discussed the representations of the Soviet agricultural leader in Estonian and Lithuanian museums.<\/p>\n<p>On<strong> February 3<\/strong>, 2022\u00a0<strong>Terje Anepaio<\/strong> participated in the discussion \u201c<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/mnemus.ut.ee\/mnemus\/galleries\/030222-arutelu-discussion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Presentation of Everyday Life in the GDR and ESSR in Museums<\/a>\u201d organized by the Estonian Embassy in Berlin (via Zoom). The discussion partner was S\u00f6ren Marotz, the exhibition director of the GDR Museum, Berlin. The discussion was moderated by <strong>Ene K\u00f5resaar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Defenses in 2022<\/h3>\n<p>On <strong>January 27<\/strong>, 2022 <strong>Eliis Vaino<\/strong> defended\u00a0the applied anthropological master\u2019s project \u201cAutistic child as a museum visitor on the example of the University of Tartu Museum\u201d, supervisor <strong>Kirsti J\u00f5esalu.\u00a0<\/strong>The master\u2019s project was completed in cooperation with the University of Tartu Museum. As part of a master\u2019s project, Eliis Vaino presented recommendations to the museum on how to better organize a museum visit for autistic pupils. <a title=\"\" href=\"\/mnemus\/galleries\/masters-thesis-defenses-27012022-magistrit%C3%B6%C3%B6de-kaitsmised\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-url=\"\/mnemus\/galleries\/masters-thesis-defenses-27012022-magistrit\u00f6\u00f6de-kaitsmised\">See photo\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>2021<\/h2>\n<h3>Fieldwork\u00a0in 2021<\/h3>\n<p>On <strong>September 3-9<\/strong>, 2021, the<strong> MNEMUS working group conducted fieldwork in Lithuania<\/strong>: in the museums of Vilnius and Kaunas. The main aim was to document and analyze the collection and exhibition activities of museums in reflecting the history of the 20th century. August 2021<\/h3>\n<p>The first meeting of the Council included joint seminars and museum visits. MNEMUS project leader Ene K\u00f5resaar introduced the project to the Advisory Board. Member of the MNEMUS project Jana Reidla, presented her doctoral <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/dspace.ut.ee\/handle\/10062\/72328\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-url=\"https:\/\/dspace.ut.ee\/handle\/10062\/72328\">dissertation<\/a> on museum research, which was to be defended on August 27. The board members visited the new permanent exhibitions of the <a title=\"\" href=\"\/mnemus\/galleries\/board-tartu-university-museum-18082021-n%C3%B5ukoda-tartu-%C3%BClikooli-muuseumis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-url=\"\/mnemus\/galleries\/board-tartu-university-museum-18082021-n\u00f5ukoda-tartu-\u00fclikooli-muuseumis\">University of Tartu Museum<\/a>, the Estonian National Museum, the Museum of Occupations and Freedom (Vabamu), and the Estonian History Museum with in-depth guided tours by the leading curators of the respective museums. At the final seminar, the members of the Board gave valuable feedback comparing the recent shifts in museums in Baltic countries.
