{"id":101,"date":"2024-04-04T06:24:59","date_gmt":"2024-04-04T03:24:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/metoodika\/?page_id=101"},"modified":"2024-04-17T11:28:31","modified_gmt":"2024-04-17T08:28:31","slug":"contact-learning-scenarios","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/metoodika\/en\/contact-learning-scenarios\/","title":{"rendered":"Contact learning scenarios"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>What to do if the teacher and students cannot be at the same time in the classroom?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>When planning face-to-face teaching (lectures, seminars, practical classes), it is necessary to be prepared that all learners and teaching staff may not always be able to participate in the classroom. This guide gives an overview of possible face-to-face teaching scenarios that teachers can experience when teaching a course.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Definitions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Contact-based teaching <\/em>\u2013 teaching and learning takes place in the same learning environment, with both the student and the teacher participating at the same time; contact-based teaching may take place on campus (everyone is in the classroom\/ on-site teaching\/learning), online (everyone is online) or in a hybrid format (some are in the classroom, some online simultaneously\/ both on-site and remote students can simultaneously attend learning activities).\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Hybrid teaching <\/em>\u2013 form of contact-based teaching in which some learners are in the classroom and some learners are online synchronously.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Partly online teaching <\/em>\u2013 form of study where the teaching and learning takes place partly online and partly in the classroom or in the form of hybrid study.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Fully online teaching <\/em>\u2013 form of study where the whole learning process in the course (presenting the content, communicating, giving feedback) takes place online, without any meetings on campus.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Some general recommendations:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prefer meeting students in the same learning environment (all online or all in the classroom, following the guidelines for responsible conduct in COVID-19);\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If necessary, replace on campus lectures with video lectures, reading materials, independent work and assignments; and after that plan a seminar or practical class to meet students to discuss or apply the materials;\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For large study groups, organise seminars or practical sessions in smaller groups, so that the group could meet in the same learning environment;\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Think carefully whether, and to what purpose, it is necessary to record contact sessions;\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take a record of all students who participated in face-to-face teaching sessions on campus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Some more aspects to consider:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When choosing equipment and applications, follow the purpose of teaching session: is it necessary to transmit the audio and\/or video of one or several people.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You should test technical equipment and applications before meeting the students, and have a back-up plan ready.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When you conduct hybrid teaching, first see what equipment and options are available in your unit or the classroom you use.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When recording contact session: in the case of lectures, inform the learners of the recording in advance; in seminars and practical sessions, ask for the learners\u2019 consent and share the recording only with learners who have registered for the course.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Five possible scenarios can be distinguished when conducting contact-based teaching:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sisu-vana.ut.ee\/sites\/default\/files\/metoodika\/files\/contact_scenarios.png\" alt=\"contac-scenarois\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>These instructions have been compiled by academic developers and instructional designers of the University of Tartu in cooperation with the IT Office. The camera should be placed so that the teacher is in the camera\u2019s field of view and close to the microphone during the lecture. Using a (wireless) collar-clip or lapel microphone would be especially recommended.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{acbc45c2-0cdc-4d14-9598-6857af608b60}{35}\" paraid=\"478824370\">Before the\u00a0class, ensure that the equipment and applications\u00a0necessary for the\u00a0planned\u00a0teaching\u00a0are\u00a0available\u00a0in the classroom\u00a0and in working\u00a0order<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width:99.0pt;border:solidwindowtext1.0pt;border-top:none\" width=\"132\">\n<p style=\"padding:0cm5.4pt0cm5.4pt\">What applications to use?\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>You can use\u00a0Panopto for recording the lecture (see\u202f<a data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/juhendid\/panopto\" href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/juhendid\/panopto\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">instructions<\/a>). In a video recorded with Panopto, it is possible to\u00a0cut out\u00a0the\u00a0unnecessary\u00a0sections, add captions and questions for a test.\u00a0<span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span lang=\"ET\" style=\"color:black\"> <\/span><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width:99.0pt;border:solidwindowtext1.0pt;border-top:none\" width=\"132\">\n<p style=\"margin:0cm;padding:0cm5.4pt0cm5.4pt\">What to consider when planning the teaching session?\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>When you\u00a0need to\u00a0record, it is worth paying attention to the following aspects:\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li paraeid=\"{acbc45c2-0cdc-4d14-9598-6857af608b60}{154}\" paraid=\"1724188983\">Stay close to the microphone or use a lapel microphone to ensure that the audio quality enables listening to important parts of the\u00a0lecture. When you receive questions and comments from the audience, it is recommended to repeat them briefly near the microphone.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li paraeid=\"{acbc45c2-0cdc-4d14-9598-6857af608b60}{167}\" paraid=\"1352050154\">Before publishing, clean the recording: cut out the unnecessary sections (for example, students gathering in the room) and long pauses; arrange the list of contents, and add questions for students to think along or interactive questions. In lectures delivered in English, it is possible to add automatic captions in English<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width:99.0pt;border:solidwindowtext1.0pt;border-top:none\" width=\"132\">\n<p style=\"padding:0cm5.4pt0cm5.4pt\">How to record attendance of participants?\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>To register students attending\u00a0a\u00a0class, it is possible to use the Moodle Attendance activity (see\u202f<a data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/juhendid\/taking-attendance\" href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/juhendid\/taking-attendance\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">instructions<\/a>).\u00a0\n<p paraeid=\"{acbc45c2-0cdc-4d14-9598-6857af608b60}{206}\" paraid=\"1813047909\">Information on students viewing the video\u202fand responding to questions in the video can be retrieved from the video statistics (the statistics shows names of students if they were logged in to Panopto while watching the video).\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width:99.0pt;border:solidwindowtext1.0pt;border-top:none\" width=\"132\">\n<p style=\"margin:0cm;padding:0cm5.4pt0cm5.4pt\">What help could be needed?\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>To record in Panopto, you need to have a folder in Panopto with recording permissions. The Panopto folder can be created in a Moodle course (see\u202f<a data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/juhendid\/panopto-0\" href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/juhendid\/panopto-0\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">instructions<\/a>). Before recording, it is useful to make a test recording in Panopto.
