\r\n\tBONUS MARES\u00a0was happy to host circa 30 attendees from ten different countries around the Baltic Sea and beyond in the final workshop in Finla<\/span>nd. Suomenlinna \u2013 the<\/span> ancient fortress in an island at the coast o<\/span>f Helsink<\/span>i s<\/span>e<\/span>rved as an inspiring location for discussion<\/span>s and group work on the 13th -14th February 2020.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\tInteractive days were filled with role plays and testing the Geo-Portal. This online tool can\u00a0be seen as a\u00a0type of\u00a0transla<\/font>tion service b<\/font>e<\/font>t<\/font>we<\/font>e<\/font>n<\/font> s<\/font>cince and policy making. It will now be developed further based on the valuable comments received form the participants who <\/font>represented reserachers, entrepreneurs and NGOs.<\/font>\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\t\u2013 Participatory Workshop in Helsinki<\/strong><\/span>\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\tIn early December,\u00a0a group of experts from various fields gathered to a stakeholder event organized by MARES in Finland.\u00a0<\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\tAltogether twenty\u00a0ecologists and economists dived into a cross-disciplinary\u00a0brainstorming session\u00a0aiming to find common understanding and ways for valuating\u00a0ecosystem services. The challenge is that the two\u00a0disciplines work with different scales and for different purposes.\u00a0Ecologists look at complexity \u2013 economists need simplification.<\/em>

However, for evidence-based\u00a0for policy making, information exchange between science\u00a0and policy is crucial.The online Geo-Spatial\u00a0web portal, which\u00a0MARES has been constructing, will\u00a0display and visualize\u00a0information on Baltic Sea ecosystem services, revealing also knowledge\u00a0gaps that need further attention. This will be further elaborated in the upcoming\u00a0workshop\u00a0in Helsinki\u00a0in February 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\tAugust 2018 \u2013\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>MARES presented in the European Marine Biology Symposium EMBS<\/b><\/span>\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\tMARES project and the results of the meta-analysis were presented in a poster session at the 54th European Marine Biology Symposium<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>held in 25-29 August in Dublin.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\tPoster<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>prepared by Anneliis Peterson<\/strong> and Melanie Heckwolf <\/strong>concluded that based on the extensive systematic literature review, there are huge knowledge gaps in quantification and mapping of ecosystem services in the Baltic Sea. More information is also needed on the applicability of monetary and non-monetary valuation methods.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\tJune\u00a02019 \u2013\u00a0 Meeting in Kiel\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\tAt the end of June the MARES reserachers from Finland and Estonia joined the German partners in Kiel\u00a0for the second joint meeting of the project. The GEOMAR folks had nicley planned the meeting on the time of the Kieler Woche\u00a0\u2013 the\u00a0Kiel Weeks<\/em>, when the city is full\u00a0of lively programme and \u2013 if possible \u2013 \u00a0more lively people.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\tUpdates and\u00a0preliminary results from the literature review were encouraging\u00a0and planning\u00a0the future\u00a0focusing on the interactive GEO-portal inspiring. As an extra activity, the whole MARES\u00a0group\u00a0was\u00a0interviewed for a\u00a0research project of the\u00a0SLU\u00a0Sweden investigating\u00a0participatory research projects and their\u00a0stakeholder engagement for impactful\u00a0knowledge. Interesting was also to see some\u00a0seagrass research in action\u00a0at the GEOMAR premises.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\tEarly in the autumn\u00a0MARES will\u00a0reach out to external experts and stakeholders\u00a0to bring their knowledge on board\u00a0with an online questionnaire on ecosystem services and their valuation\u00a0methods. This info will feed\u00a0into the GEO-portal where enyone can access geographic and graphically presented data on ecosystem services valuation\u00a0\u00a0\u2013 this data will remain live in the portal\u00a0after the project. \r\n\tThe MARES group had a nice chance to visit the GEOMAR\u2019s research\u00a0vessel\u00a0ALKOR \u2013 which is on the sea 2-3\u00a0weeks at a time. Due to the the Kieler Woche it was open to general public and participated in information\u00a0dissemination\u00a0on marine life and current reserach projects through\u00a0small exhibitions.\u00a0\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\tMarch 2019<\/strong> \u2013<\/span> As the first activity during winter 2018 \u2013 2019, we have performed a scoping literature search<\/strong> in order to know how much literature exists on ecosystem services in the Baltic Sea area.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\tBased on this initial query, we established the major terms for full-scale systematic review<\/strong> and performed the full search. As much as 3089 papers were found on ecosystem services for shallow water communities provided by submerged vegetation, seagrass beds and mussel reefs. Currently we are analysing the papers, extracting and summarizing relevant data.\u00a0\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n
