The position is funded by the Estonian Research Council project \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.etis.ee\/Portal\/Projects\/Display\/ea0cc92e-5bd7-4e5f-af17-7ea40345422d\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.etis.ee\/Portal\/Projects\/Display\/ea0cc92e-5bd7-4e5f-af17-7ea40345422d\">Native Language Experience and the Brain\u2019s Perception and Learning of a Foreign Language<\/a>\u201d (2024\u20132028) awarded to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.etis.ee\/CV\/Siqi_Lyu\/eng\/\">Dr. Siqi Lyu<\/a>. The project investigates how the tonal component in Estonian, which is of secondary status in the Estonian phonetic system, and the Chinese tone, a dominant cue to discriminate word meanings in Chinese, affect the respective native speaker\u2019s perception and learning of a foreign language differently. The successful candidate will be co-supervised by Dr. Siqi Lyu (Institute of Psychology),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.etis.ee\/CV\/P%C3%A4rtel_Lippus\/eng\/\">Dr. P\u00e4rtel Lippus<\/a>\u00a0(Institute of General and Estonian Linguistics), and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.etis.ee\/CV\/Kairi_Kreegipuu\/eng\/\">Dr. Kairi Kreegipuu<\/a>\u00a0(Institute of Psychology).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The successful candidate will enter a 4-year fixed-term employment contract with the University of Tartu as a junior research fellow\u00a0<strong>starting February 2025<\/strong>\u00a0(or soon after that). The tasks of this position are to design and conduct project-related experiments, analyze the data, and write and publish the results. There is a chance of being involved in teaching or co-supervising BA or MA student(s) if the candidate wants to gain relevant experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gross salary: starting from 1900 EUR\/month<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eligibility:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A master\u2019s degree in linguistics, psychology, cognitive science, or a relevant field<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experience with designing or conducting psychological\/psycholinguistic experiments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experience with using programming languages (e.g., R or Matlab)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Highly motivated<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Good English writing skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preference will be given to applicants with the following qualifications:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Experience with the writing or publishing of peer-reviewed journal articles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experience with tonal language perception experiments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NB! <\/strong>The project does not approach language learning from a pedagogical perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Evaluation process:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>(1) <\/strong>Please send your\u00a0<strong>CV<\/strong>\u00a0and a short\u00a0<strong>motivation letter<\/strong>\u00a0to Dr. Siqi Lyu (<a href=\"mailto:siqi.lyu@ut.ee\">siqi.lyu@ut.ee<\/a>)<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>by\u00a0<strong>November 21, 2024<\/strong>. The university\u2019s application system will be open until November 30, 2024.
