He received his Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of California, Santa Barbara for his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/escholarship.org\/uc\/item\/8w68m3k0\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/escholarship.org\/uc\/item\/8w68m3k0\">grammar of Yuki<\/a>, an indigenous language of Northern California. Uldis is a descendant of Latvian WWII refugees and the first Livonians he knew (Erna Aizkalns (n\u00e9e Belte) of Pomona, California and Silvija Rudz\u012btis (n\u00e9e Bertholds) of Hyde Park, Massachusetts) were also part of this community. Over the years, Livonian has always remained a part of Uldis\u2019s life both in professional and personal contexts. He is the author of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/livonian.tech\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">English translation of the Livonian dictionary<\/a>\u00a0and has also studied the history of the Livonian community abroad.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Uldis Balodis\u00a0is a Research Fellow of Southern Finnic Languages and Language Typology \u200b\u200bat the University of Tartu and a Researcher at the University of Latvia Livonian Institute.
