The LEAP is a grass-roots approach to Lesson Study (LS) in Initial Teacher Education (ITE), to give teacher educators (TEs) and pre-service teachers (PSTs) from all partners an opportunity to participate in LS cycles through a week-long immersion programme. The programme provides opportunities to participate in key elements of LS, including live research lesson observations and post-lesson discussions.
The specific objectives are:

Design a week-long LEAP as an immersive experience for PSTs and TEs to learn more about LS, including designing, adapting & translating relevant materials for all partners for their participation in the LEAP;

Design materials and evaluative tools for the LEAP, based on the systematic literature review (WP3);

Run a week-long LEAP as an immersive experience for PSTs and TEs to learn more about LS;

Evaluate learning for TEs & PSTs who participated in the project;

Share findings with WP3 to further develop their LIFT blueprint.

Therefore, the main activities are the following:

Activity 1 – Preparation of the LEAP programme – this includes preparing the LEAP programme and materials, including liaising with all host schools, TEs and PSTs who will be involved. Three research lessons are conducted, observed and reflected on through post-lesson discussions. Interviews with PSTs who conducted the research lessons, supervising teacher educators and pupils within the research lessons will help to evaluate the experience. There are also pre- and post-questionnaires for participating PSTs and TEs regarding teaching self-efficacy; Lesson Study knowledge and skills; and attitude towards Lesson Study. Additionally, post-lesson discussions with guiding questions will take place. Each partner institute reflects on their participation in LEAP.

Activity 3 – Evaluation of the data – this includes analysing the qualitative and quantitative evaluation data generated during the LEAP week: interviews, questionnaires, discussions.

WP2 is led by Dr Siebrich de Vries from NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences Leeuwarden (the Netherlands), Dr Stéphane Clivaz from HEP Vaud (Switzerland) and by Dr Thomas Delahunty and Dr Diarmaid Hyland from Maynooth University (Ireland).

Lesson Study Exploratory Academic Programme (LEAP) is developed by LIFT project partners in WP2 for all partners in the consortium.
