{"id":251,"date":"2024-04-04T02:50:46","date_gmt":"2024-04-03T23:50:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/juhendid\/moodle-activities-suitable-group-work\/"},"modified":"2024-04-10T19:51:15","modified_gmt":"2024-04-10T16:51:15","slug":"moodle-activities-suitable-group-work","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/juhendid\/moodle-activities-suitable-group-work\/?lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Moodle activities suitable for group work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-bottom:7.5pt\">\n\t<span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"color:#565656\">In Moodle, the following activities can be used for group work <\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\t<a data-url=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/juhendid\/forum-0\" href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/juhendid\/forum-0\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"color:#428bca\">Forum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span> \u2013 create the forum (for asynchronous communication, presentation of group work) and set a suitable group mode<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span>Wiki \u2013 create a wiki and set a suitable group mode (each group member can only edit the files of their own group)<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span>Chat \u2013 for synchronous communication<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<a data-url=\"\/juhendid\/\" href=\"\/juhendid\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/juhendid\/mindmap\" rel=\"noopener\">Mindmap<\/a><span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span> \u2013 a separate mindmap must be created for each group<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span>Group self-selection \u2013 first create empty groups in the course and allow learners to join a suitable group<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span>Assignment \u2013 a member of the group (or all members) presents the group work and the members of the group are assessed either individually or all together (same grade) <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"margin: 15pt 0cm 7.5pt\">\n\t<span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"color:#2a5188\">Example<\/span><\/span><br>\n<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span>Your course contains seminars, and students enrol to seminar groups in the SIS. In the e-course, you would like to use two group works.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span>The first group work is conducted in groups of four. The students are expected to make a summary as a group in the e-course and you will assess the group as a whole. The groups should not see other groups\u2019 submissions.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span>The second group work is conducted in the same groups of four, in the form of a webinar. Each group selects their own topic. You will assess each learner\u2019s participation individually and after the end of the group work you want all groups to see and comment on other groups\u2019 work.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:7.5pt\">\n\t<span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"color:#565656\">How to plan the group work:<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:7.5pt\">\n\t<span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"color:#565656\">1. If learners have enrolled into groups in the SIS, also the groups are transferred with the learners to the e-course.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span>To make it more convenient to filter learners by groups, set up group mode in the e-course: <i>Administration \u2013 Edit settings \u2013 Group mode: Visible groups <\/i>or <i>Separate groups \u2013 Force group mode <\/i>set to <i>No \u2013 No grouping.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span>Manually or auto-create empty groups: <i>Administration \u2013 Users \u2013 Groups<\/i> \u2013 <i>Auto-create groups<\/i> and specify the suitable settings. To import empty groups, select <em>Ignore users in groups<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span>Add the <i>Group self-selection<\/i> activity to the course, specify the number of learners in groups in the menu on the left <em>Max members per group<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span>To distinguish between the two different group systems (seminar groups and group work groups), create a grouping of the group work groups. To create a grouping, go to the groups page (<i>Administration \u2013 Users \u2013 Groups<\/i>), select the tab <i>Groupings<\/i> and click on the button <i>Create grouping<\/i>. To assign groups into the grouping, click the people icon in the column on the right.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:7.5pt\">\n\t<span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"color:#565656\">2. Add an assignment to the course as an activity.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span>In the assignment settings, select <i>Students submit in groups \u2013 Yes <\/i>and under <i>Grouping for student groups <\/i>select the grouping created from group work groups. <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span>To make it easier to filter the submitted assignments by groups, set the group mode also in the general module settings: <i>Group mode<\/i> \u2013 <i>Separate groups or Visible groups; <\/i>under <i>Grouping<\/i>, select the grouping created from group work groups.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:7.5pt\">\n\t<span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"color:#565656\">3. For the second group work, the groups have already been created and the learners assigned into groups. <\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span>For this group work, it is suitable to use forum in the separate groups mode. Learners can discuss, hidden from other groups, and make a summary. You can assess their forum posts. In the forum settings, set the forum as graded and select the group mode: <i>Group mode<\/i> \u2013 <i>Separate groups or Visible groups; <\/i>under <i>Grouping<\/i>, select the grouping created from group work groups.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span>For choosing a topic it is suitable to use e.g. the wiki, which IS NOT in group mode and contains a table for names of topics, to which learners can write the name of their group or group members.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span>To make the group work summaries accessible to other groups to comment, you need to create one more forum, which IS NOT in group mode, and ask a representative of each group to submit their summary. As you assessed students\u2019 participation in group work using the previous forum, this forum is not graded.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"border-bottom:dotted#eeeeee2.25pt;border-top:dotted#eeeeee2.25pt;border-left:none;border-right:none;padding:4.0pt0cm5.0pt0cm\">\n<h5 style=\"border: none;margin-top: 7.5pt;padding: 0cm\">\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height:18.0pt\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"color:#a02b2b\">NB!
