What is Moodle\u00a0test\u00a0proctoring\u00a0plugin?<\/h3>\n

The quiz\u00a0proctoring\u202fplugin\u202f(Moodle\u202fproctoring) has been added to Moodle and it\u202frequires that the test taker allow web browser access to\u00a0their\u00a0webcam.<\/h5>\n

The webcam captures images of the\u00a0student\u00a0at\u00a0certain\u00a0intervals during the test, which the lecturer can review after the quiz has been\u00a0taken\u00a0to detect possible violations\u00a0(e.g. the webcam is covered and the image of the\u00a0student\u00a0is not visible;\u00a0too few images indicating that access to the camera has been taken away\u00a0at some point;\u00a0the\u00a0student\u00a0is missing from the frame;\u00a0there is\u00a0somebody else\u00a0in the frame;\u00a0the student seems to be talking to someone\u00a0etc.).<\/p>\n

The images are stored on the university\u2019s Moodle server and\u00a0will be\u00a0deleted automatically after four weeks.<\/h5>\n

If\u00a0the\u00a0quiz proctoring\u00a0plugin is specified\u00a0in\u00a0the quiz settings, the\u00a0student\u00a0will be required to give access to the webcam in a web browser prior to the start of the test. If the student does not grant\u00a0access, it is not possible to\u00a0take\u00a0the quiz. Therefore, before using the plugin, make sure that all\u00a0students\u00a0have a webcam so that they can take a\u00a0proctored\u00a0quiz. If possible, offer\u00a0students\u00a0the opportunity to try a\u00a0mock\u00a0test under the same conditions before taking the\u00a0proctored\u00a0test.<\/p>\n

How can you activate the proctoring plugin?<\/h3>\n

The\u00a0activation\u00a0of\u00a0the proctoring\u00a0plugin is very simple \u2013 its use must be\u00a0specified\u00a0from the quiz settings. The quiz settings must be opened and\u00a0the\u00a0webcam identify validation<\/strong> must be specified\u00a0under\u00a0extra restrictions of attemots (choose\u00a0\u201cmust be acknowledged before starting an attempt<\/strong>\u201d).<\/p>\n

The quiz page displays a message to the quiz taker\u00a0that this quiz is subject to proctoring and that it is necessary to allow web browser\u00a0access\u00a0to the webcam\u00a0in order to\u00a0take\u00a0the quiz.<\/p>\n

The lecturer can see the pictures\u00a0taken\u00a0during the quiz on the quiz page\u00a0by clicking\u00a0View\u00a0proctoring\u00a0report<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The images can be viewed one quiz taker at a time. If no\u00a0violations\u00a0occur, it is recommended to delete images immediately using the\u00a0Delete all<\/strong>\u00a0button. If you do not delete images immediately, they will be automatically deleted from the server\u00a0after\u00a0four weeks.<\/p>\n

What to keep in mind when making a proctored test?<\/h3>\n
If you are using a proctored quiz, put all questions on separate pages.<\/h5>\n

This is so that if a\u00a0student\u00a0disables access to the webcam during the quiz,\u00a0they\u00a0cannot move the next page until\u00a0they\u00a0have\u00a0allowed access to the webcam again. If all the questions in the quiz are on a single page, the\u00a0student\u00a0can answer the questions even if they have\u00a0disabled\u00a0access\u00a0to\u00a0the webcam during the quiz (there are fewer images available in the report than would be expected\u00a0based on the length of the test).<\/p>\n

It is recommended to use the proctored quiz together with\u00a0the\u00a0test window\u00a0JavaScript\u00a0browser security.<\/h5>\n

The quiz will then open for the\u00a0student\u00a0with some JavaScript security in a full-screen popup window. For example, it is not possible to paste text from elsewhere to the text box of the question, and it is forbidden to use certain keyboard\u00a0combinations (e.g. Ctrl+).<\/p>\n

The\u00a0proctored\u00a0test cannot be used in conjunction with SafeExamBrowser\u00a0(SEB).<\/h5>\n

Recommendations for the\u00a0quiz taker<\/h3>\n

The quiz can only be\u00a0taken\u00a0with updated and newer browsers (Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari). For example, the quiz cannot be\u00a0taken\u00a0with Internet Explorer, which is not supported by\u00a0Microsoft\u00a0anymore. It is important to make sure that the webcam is not used by any other program before starting the quiz. If necessary, popups should be enabled to\u00a0take\u00a0the test.<\/p>\n
