{"id":193,"date":"2024-04-04T02:50:39","date_gmt":"2024-04-03T23:50:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/juhendid\/forum\/"},"modified":"2024-04-10T19:28:05","modified_gmt":"2024-04-10T16:28:05","slug":"forum","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/juhendid\/forum\/?lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Forum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\tForum is a medium for asynchronous communication, for group work and for submitting assignments; forums can be graded. By default, each new course has one forum <em>Announcements to learners (news forum)<\/em>. Only teachers can send new posts to this forum (i.e. start new discussions or send news and announcements). In this forum, learners can only reply to the teacher\u2019s posts. This is why at least one more forum should be added to each course \u2013for example, the <em>Question and Answer forum<\/em>, in which learners can post without limitations.\n<\/p>\n<h3>\n\tThere are 5 types of forums:<br>\n<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>\n\t\t<em>Standard forum for general use<\/em><i> \u2013 <\/i>a classical forum where learners can post (start a new discussion) and also reply to messages posted to the forum.\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<em>Each person posts one discussion<\/em><i> <\/i>\u2013 each learner can write a new post to this forum to be answered and can respond to all posts sent to the forum.\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<em>Single simple discussion<\/em><i> \u2013 <\/i>in this type of forum, one topic is displayed on the page (task description) to which learners can respond. Learners cannot post a new discussion topic to the forum.\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<em>Q &amp; A (Question and Answer) forum<\/em><i> <\/i>\u2013 in this forum the learner is able to view other learners\u2019 posts only after having first posted his or her own message. This forum encourages learners to first express their own original opinion without being influenced by peers\u2019 responses. It is important to remember that the teacher needs to first send questions to the forum.\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<em>Standard forum displayed in a blog-like format<\/em> is an open forum in which everyone can start a new discussion. Topics are displayed on one page with links \u201c<em>Discuss this topic<\/em>\u201c.\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>\n\tForum posting<br>\n<\/h3>\n<p>\n\tTo post to the forum, click on the forum title \u2013 the corresponding forum opens. Click <em>Add a new discussion topic<\/em><i>.<\/i> Enter the <em>Subject<\/em> and the <em>Message<\/em>. To add a file (<em>Attachment<\/em><i>), <\/i>click <em>Add<\/em><i>, <\/i>find the necessary file or simply drag the file to the attachment window. To send the post, click <em>Post to forum<\/em>.\n<\/p>\n<h3>\n\tSending forum posts to your email inbox \u2013 Forum subscription<br>\n<\/h3>\n<p>\n\tMoodle enables to subscribe to course announcements and copies of forum postings to receive them in your regular email inbox (this is <em>Forum subscription<\/em>). Subscription can be set up separately for each forum and also in user profile settings.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe teacher can determine whether forum subscription is optional, forced, automatic or disabled. If you have subscribed to the forum, copies of forum posts are forwarded as emails. In the case of optional subscription each user can set up whether to subscribe or not (<em>Activities \u2013 Forums \u2013 Subscribe<\/em>). In the case of automatic subscription you always subscribe when you have posted a message to the forum.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u2026\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe teacher can see in each forum setting block who have subscribed to the forum (open forum \u2013 <i>Settings \u2013 Show\/edit current subscribers<\/i>).\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIt is possible to choose the <b>format in which the posts are forwarded<\/b> (<i>Activities \u2013 Forums \u2013 Email digest type<\/i>).\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u2026\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tEach user can edit their profile settings: <em>User\u2019s name \u2013 Preferences \u2013 Messaging<\/em>. In the messaging page you can choose which messages are sent to you by e-mail. These choices are not connected with a specific course, but apply to the entire Moodle environment.\n<\/p>\n<h5>\n\tNB! Therefore, if the user does not want to receive any post copies in their email, cancel the e-mail notification of new posts (<em>User\u2019s name \u2013 Preferences \u2013 Messaging).<\/em> If you want to cancel receiving the post copies from a specific forum, and the lecturer has allowed it in the forum settings, you have to cancel subscription to the specific forum (<em>Activities block \u2013 Forums \u2013 Subscribe \u2013 No<\/em>).<br>\n<\/h5>\n<h3>\n\tForum tracking<br>\n<\/h3>\n<p>\n\tForum tracking helps Moodle users to immediately notice new forum posts on Moodle dashboard or on the course homepage.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u2026\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tCourse designers can enable forum tracking separately for each forum under <em>Forum tracking<\/em>. By default, tracking is forced for all forums.\n<\/p>\n<h3>\n\tForum with group mode<br>\n<\/h3>\n<p>\n\tA forum with group mode may have:\n<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n\t\t<em>Separate groups<\/em> \u2013 members of different groups cannot see the posts of another group.\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<em>Visible groups<\/em> \u2013 members of different groups can see each other\u2019s posts but cannot reply to posts of other groups.\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>\n\tForum grading<br>\n<\/h3>\n<p>\n\tForums enable grading the posts in the forum. For grading, in the forum settings block under <em>Ratings<\/em>, select:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\taggregation type (if you rate several posts of a specific learner, how all the ratings are combined to form the final grade in the gradebook)\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\ttype of scale\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tif you use a non-numerical scale, one of the existing scales (can be set up in the gradebook)\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tif you use a numerical scale, maximum points\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\t\u2026\n<\/p>\n<h3>\n\tTo add a new forum:<br>\n<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tin the drop-down menu that opens under <em>Add an activity or resource<\/em><i>, <\/i>select <em>Forum<\/em>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tgive the forum a name and add a description\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tselect the suitable type of forum\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tensure that forum tracking is enabled\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tspecify whether forum post notifications are emailed (<em>Forum subscriptions<\/em>)\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tif grading is enabled in the forum, specify the aggregation type and scale\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tif the forum is used with groups, select the suitable group mode\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>\n\tTo grade learners:<br>\n<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\topen a post sent to the forum\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tselect the suitable grade in the drop-down menu at the bottom of the post\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Forum is a medium for asynchronous communication, for group work and for submitting assignments; forums can be graded.
