{"id":192,"date":"2024-04-04T02:50:38","date_gmt":"2024-04-03T23:50:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/juhendid\/grading-learners-moodle\/"},"modified":"2024-04-10T19:43:42","modified_gmt":"2024-04-10T16:43:42","slug":"grading-learners-moodle","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/juhendid\/grading-learners-moodle\/?lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Grading learners in Moodle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-bottom:7.5pt\">\n\t<span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"color:#565656\">Grading is an essential part of the teaching and learning process: it gives feedback to the teacher on the effectiveness of the teaching methods and study materials used, and to students about the level they have achieved.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:7.5pt\">\n\t<span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"color:#565656\">A number of Moodle activities can be graded (an activity must be previously set as graded) \u2013 after the learner submits an assignment, the teacher can directly from the same activity enter the marks, assessment or grade to the student and the result is automatically transferred to the gradebook. For each graded activity, a column is automatically created in the gradebook. You can manually create new columns and manually enter grades\/marks in them.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:7.5pt\">\n\t<span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"color:#565656\">The gradebook opens in the block <i>Administration \u2013 Grades <\/i>or <i>Administration \u2013 Gradebook setup.<\/i> <\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:7.5pt\">\n\t<span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"color:#565656\">Both will lead to the gradebook but the link <i>Gradebook setup <\/i>immediately opens the <i>Setup\u00a0<\/i>tab<i>.<\/i><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span>From the <i>View<\/i> tab the gradebook of the whole style=\"line-height:normal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"color:#565656\">From the last column of the Moodle gradebook (<i>Course total<\/i>) the grades can be directly exported to the SIS. First, the gradebook must be accurately set up: both individually grade activities and the course final grade.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<h3>\n\t<span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:#2e74b5\">1. Decide whether you want to use numerical, verbal or letter grades to grade the learners\u2019 activities<\/span><\/span><\/span><br>\n<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span>If you want to use the <b>numerical <\/b>scale, enter the maximum grade in the graded activity settings and when you grade the forum, you can select an integer value from the drop-down menu (<a href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/177\/hindamine_numbriga.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"color:#428bca\">example<\/span><\/b><\/a>) or when you grade an assignment, you can enter a number yourself (it may be a decimal, with the point as separator). Numerical grades are also available if you grade using a rubric (<a href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/177\/hindamine_maatriks.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"color:#428bca\">example<\/span><\/b><\/a>) or a marking guide (<a href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/177\/hindamine_juhend.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"color:#428bca\">example<\/span><\/b><\/a>). In a <b>rubric<\/b>, first enter the criteria, criteria levels and the points for each level. To grade a learner\u2019s submission, click on a cell in rubrics grid. Moodle will sum up the points for the respective cells. In a <b>marking guide<\/b>,<b> <\/b>enter criteria and the marks for each criterion. As you grade, add a comment and the points received. Moodle will sum up the received points.<\/span><\/span><\/span><br>\u00a0\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span>If you want to use <b>verbose<\/b> grades, create the scales and when you grade a submission you can select the suitable value from the drop-down menu (<a href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/177\/hindamine_sonaga.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"color:#428bca\">example<\/span><\/b><\/a>). In every e-course there is already the default scale Fail\/Pass, the scale with letter grades F, E, D, C, B, A. The verbose scale may also include numbers (e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5), etc. In the verbose scale, Moodle also gives a numerical value to each result, from the left, the poorest result = 1 point, next 2 points, etc. This allows setting the grade to pass. Thus, fail \u2013 1 point and pass \u2013 2 points (grade to pass \u2013 2); F \u2013 1 point, E \u2013 2 points, D \u2013 3 points, C \u2013 4 points, B \u2013 5 points, A \u2013 6 points (grade to pass \u2013 2).<\/span><\/span><\/span><br>\u00a0\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"color:#565656\"><span style=\"line-height:normal\"><span>In each course there is a <b>letter scale <\/b>(which is customisable) in which a letter or another value corresponds to each percentage range (<a href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/177\/hindamine_taht.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"color:#428bca\">example<\/span><\/b><\/a>). The letter scale can be set in the gradebook to the final course grade and to each graded activity. The points the learner has received are recalculated automatically into letter grades according to the given percentages.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>\n\t<span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"color:#2e74b5\">2. If in the activity settings you set the maximum points to 10 but maximum score according to the rubric is 8, the learner\u2019s result is automatically converted to a 10-point scale. In a rubric, the total points for the lowest level should be 0 and the next level should define the points to pass. This is why it is often necessary to later arrange the columns into the correct order. For example, quiz results are entered in the gradebook in points but starting from 80% the quiz is shown to be passed and below 80%, failed. First you have to change the letter grade scale (see above) and then the grade display type for the activity.
