Adobe Connect Pro

Adobe Connect Pro is suitable for conducting and recording a web-based seminar, meeting, lecture, training. Computers of all participants should have a newer version of a web browser (Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox), Adobe Flash Player and a considerably quick internet connection.

1. How to get a virtual classroom?

If you wish to use the Adobe Acrobat Connect Pro virtual classroom for the first time, you should send an e-mail to eope@ut.ee to receive a login and the virtual room (at least 1 workday in advance). The login and password will be sent in an automatic e-mail. The address for the virtual classroom will be sent by the educational technologist.

2. How to enter the virtual classroom?

All virtual classrooms can be found at the address which is formed as following: http://kontakt.ut.ee/name_of_your_virtual_classroom

The instructor writes the address of their virtual classroom in the browser and enters with their login and password which were sent with an e-mail. Learners can enter as guests by entering their name.

The second option is to enter using the general address http://kontakt.ut.ee, then click the tag My Meetings and then the address of the desired virtual classroom.

3. What is in the virtual classroom?

Your virtual classroom is similar to the following image:

There are separate windows for video feeds (Camera and Voice), sharing a presentation/screenshot/whiteboard (Share), list of participants (Attendee List), chatroom (Chat). You can add additional tools to your classroom by clicking Pods in the upper menu.

4. How can others see and hear you?

For the first meeting, you have to set your camera and microphone for the video feed: from the upper menu Meeting - Manage My Settings and Audio Setup Wizard and Select Camera. When you set the audio, you should test the microphone, speakers and background noise and set the required audio input (separate microphone or web camera). Also provide the video input - probably your web camera. You can then start the video feed by clicking the camera icon in the Camera and Voice window.

In the lower left corner of your virtual classroom is the microphone button Talk and a padlock next to it. By clicking the padlock, you activate the so called hands free and the button becomes darker. You are then asked to confirm starting the audio feed in a small pop-up window, click Allow. The microphone is active if the Talk button in the bottom of the page is dark, green lines are moving under it and a loudspeaker button is displayed next to the participant’s name in the attendee list.

Other participants should also set their camera and microphone beforehand, but for the audio feed, others need to click the button with the figure raising a hand and then receive permission from the instructor. A small pop-up window with a permission request appears in the upper right corner of the instructor’s screen. If you click Approve, you put the learner on hold – a corresponding sign appears next to their name on the attendee list. Now you can allow them to speak at a suitable time by moving the cursor on their name and clicking the microphone icon in the opening window. You can end the learner’s speech from the same icon.

If several participants have their microphones turned on at the same time, it might impair the sound quality. Therefore, it is reasonable to activate the microphone only for talking (button Talk) and not use the hands free button.

5. How to display a presentation?

Presentations must be saved in an older format – ppt (not pptx)! You can open your presentation from the window Share by clicking Documents and selecting Select from My Computer. To change the slides of the presentation, click the arrows in the lower left corner of the presentation. Using the keyboard does not change the slides.

6. What is the chat for?

Participants can ask questions in the chat. You should check every now and then whether someone has written in the chat. You can answer the questions in your talk either on the go or at the end of the class.

How to record the whole class?

In order to record the class, you need to start recording at the beginning of the class – select Meeting - Record Meeting from the upper menu. Replace the text in the Name box with the title of your class and add a short summary (few sentences) if you wish. When the recording starts, a small red ball appears in the upper right corner of the screen and a corresponding window opens to stop recording. In order to stop recording, click Stop Recording or the red ball.

7. How to end the class?

Make sure the recording of the class has stopped. In order to end the class, click Meeting - End Meeting in the upper menu. You can enter concluding words in the text box in the window that opens and click OK.

8. Where is the recording?

You can allow others to see the recording later. You can find your recordings by clicking Meeting - Manage Meeting Information in the upper menu and then the link Recordings on the opening page.

The page that opens displays a list of all the recordings in this virtual classroom. You can make the recordings public on the recordings page by clicking Make Public. By clicking the name of the recording, you are displayed information about the recording and also the web link of the recording. This is the address for viewing the recording. You can share this address via e-mail or by adding it as a web link to your e-course.

What do I need to participate as learner?

In order to participate in the class, you need to know the web address of the virtual classroom, have a computer with an internet connection and an internet browser (Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox) and speakers or headphones to listen to the video feed. If you wish to speak yourself, you also need a microphone.

How do I enter the virtual classroom?

The instructor will tell you the web address of the virtual classroom. You enter as a guest by typing your first and last name. You can enter the virtual classroom only when the instructor has also entered and opened the room for you.

What is in the virtual classroom?

The instructor will then put you on hold and the hand-raising icon will appear next to your name on the attendee list. If the instructor allows you to speak at a suitable time, the hand-raising icon is replaced with the microphone icon. In order to talk, you need to start the virtual classroom microphone. For this, in the lower left corner of the virtual classroom there is a microphone icon Talk and a padlock next to it. By clicking the padlock, the so called hands free starts and the button becomes darker. You are then asked to confirm in a small pop-up window where you should click Allow. Your microphone is now active and others can hear you.
