Previous scholarship has primarily interpreted the preface within the contexts of church policy, educational reform, and the history of the Latvian written language. In contrast, this study argues that it presents a coherent theological interpretation of historia salutis.

The analysis demonstrates that the internal structure of the preface is organised around four interconnected theological categories—Providentia Dei, Verbum Dei, Ecclesia universalis, and Regnum Christi—which together express Fischer’s understanding of God’s saving activity in history. Particular attention is also given to the Lutheran doctrine of vocation (vocatio), showing that Fischer understands King Charles XI of Sweden, the clergy, and the translators of the Bible as instruments of divine providence.

The article concludes that, for Fischer, the publication of the Latvian Bible was not primarily a cultural or philological achievement but an event within God’s saving work, through which the Church in Livonia was incorporated into the universal Church and the ongoing history of salvation.

Keywords: Johann Fischer, Latvian Bible (1694), Lutheran Orthodoxy, historia salutis, Providentia Dei, Verbum Dei, Ecclesia universalis, Regnum Christi, vocatio, Swedish Livonia.

</details>

Beata Paškevica
Fischer in Sulzbach (1666–1672)
Königliche Buchdruckerey in Riga (poster presentation)

Aivar Põldvee
Superintendent General Johann Fischer as a Patron and His Clients

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Abstract

The paper examines Johann Fischer’s network of relationships in Livonia, focusing on his young associates and protégés.

</details>

Kristiina Ross
Johann Fischer and the Structure of Written Estonian

Jacob Schilling
Das nonkonformistische Netzwerk des jungen Johann Fischer

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Abstract

</details>

Uģis Sildegs
Johann Fischer as a Theology of Removing Intermediaries: A Structural Reinterpretation of Livonian Lutheranism (1680–1705)

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Abstract

This paper proposes a new interpretative framework for understanding Johann Fischer’s work in Livonia by identifying a single theological principle that unifies his otherwise disparate administrative, linguistic, and ecclesiastical decisions. Drawing on published sources, including the 1687 Bible conference documents and Fischer’s own writings, the paper argues that Fischer consistently acted from a christological conviction that every human intermediary between the Word and the hearer is provisional, service-oriented, and—where possible—reducible.

In all his major decisions Fischer reduces the number of intermediaries between the Word and the listener. This perspective allows a structural reinterpretation of several key episodes: his insistence on translating Scripture from Greek rather than Luther’s German; his advocacy for vernacular orthography against clerical convenience; his establishment of the royal printing press outside municipal control; his resistance to estate patronage based on Augsburg Confession XXVIII; his program of books, schools, and catechisms designed to shift religious competence from clerical presence to textual availability; and even his use of anonymity and pseudonyms as a theological gesture.

The paper also explains Fischer’s unique position between orthodoxy and separatist Pietism: orthodoxy built intermediaries, Pietism replaced them, while Fischer sought fewer of them. This “nowhere position” led to his marginalization in Livonia but made him a suitable arbiter in Halle’s central Pietist conflict in 1700. Finally, the paper shows how Fischer’s theology reached its full realization only after his departure, when war and plague removed the last intermediary—state power—and left the printed Word in the hands of lay households.

</details>

Gvido Straube

</details>

Kai Tafenau
Johann Fischer als Organisator der estnischen Bibelübersetzung

The detailed conference programme, including session times, will be published here.
