Pre-conference programme
8-9 July 2017
We are planning a two-day language tutorial prior to the conference. Participants will have a choice between two Estonian language courses (please note that these lessons run in parallel sessions):
Introduction to practical Estonian (regular 40 EUR, students 25 EUR)

Time July 8 (Sat):14-16, 16-18; July 9 (Sun):10-12, 12-14, 15-17
The course takes place on Saturday and Sunday (8-9 July), 10 hours altogether.
Come and learn to
- greet and say good bye
- pronounce hauaööõudused and distinguish between three vowel and consonant lengths
- order a piece of cake and a coffee in the singular nominative but two pieces of cake and two coffees in the singular partitive
- ask and answer basic questions related to university and conference -life
- conjugate some basic verbs and forget about personal endings in negative sentences
- ponder about the roots and contacts of Estonian
Instructor: Miina Norvik (PhD in the Finnic languages). Miina has 5 years of experience with teaching Estonian to foreigners. She has held courses in the summer university as well as the local language center at the University of Tartu.

Most typologically challenging aspects of Estonian covered by Estonian linguists from a cognitive-functional perspective. Some of the topics covered are:
- stem alternations
- declinations and conjugations
- function nuances of case suffixes and adpositions
- basic argument structure constructions
- valency changing constructions
- word order
