Selle teadmistel\u00fcnga lahendamiseks asutasid Tartu \u00dclikool ja Eesti Maa\u00fclikool projekti FunAqua, et uurida ja dokumenteerida seente mitmekesisust veekogudes \u00fclemaailmselt. Seened m\u00e4ngivad maismaa\u00f6kos\u00fcsteemide lagunemisel, taimede toitumisel ja taimekahjustustel v\u00f5tmerolli ning hiljutised molekulaarsed uuringud n\u00e4itavad, et p\u00e4rmitaoliste, lipuliste ja niitjate rakuvormidega seened on m\u00f5nikord vee-elupaikades domineerivad. Need seened, sealhulgas Chytridiomycota ja Rozellomycota, toimivad patogeenide ja orgaanilise materjali lagundajatena. Vaatamata m\u00f5ningasele dokumentatsioonile seente mitmekesisuse kohta konkreetsetes vee\u00f6kos\u00fcsteemides kogu maailmas, on prooviv\u00f5tumeetodite ja molekulaarsete identifitseerimisvahendite erinevused takistanud p\u00f5hjalike j\u00e4relduste tegemist domineerivate seener\u00fchmade ja \u00fcldise mitmekesisuse kohta.
