Eduard Ludvig W\u00f6hrmann (28 December 1863 \u2013 25 November 1934) was a poet and literator.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

W\u00f6hrmann was born on Veski farm at H\u00e4rjanurme village, Kursi parish, in Tartu County as the son of a farm renter. From 1872\u20131877, he attended J\u00f5une village school, later worked on his father\u2019s farm, was a wool comber and a miller\u2019s apprentice at H\u00e4rjanurme, Puurmani, J\u00f5geva and in Southern Russia.\u00a0 From 1907, he worked as a well-digger in Tartu where he lived until his death.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

W\u00f6hrmann made his debut in the 1880s, publishing poems in many newspapers and magazines. Eduard Ludvig W\u00f6hrmann\u2019s significance for the history of literature lies mainly in his bulky collection of poems N\u00f5mme lillekesed<\/em> (\u2018Heath Flowers\u2019, 1903). The author\u2019s creation, like that of many of his contemporaries, reflects the disappointment moods after Estonians\u2019 first national awakening period.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The poetry collection is divided into thematic cycles where the themes are, for example, love, feelings of transience, contradictions between the rich and the poor. The most colourful and of lasting value are the mildly satirical poems about tragicomical situations caused by pecuniary differences, for example, marrying because of dowry. Such satirical scenes bear some semblance to Karl Eduard S\u00f6\u00f6t\u2019s village satires which date from approximately the same period. The feeling of transience that pained the author since his youth is also similar to K. E. S\u00f6\u00f6t. In some poems, however, a tragic perception of the world in the manner of Juhan Liiv can be discerned. Some poems of this collection, like Eide unen\u00e4gu<\/i> (\u2018Old Woman\u2019s Dream\u2019) and Lapsed tuppa<\/i> (\u2018Children, Come Inside\u2019) were set to music in W\u00f6hrmann\u2019s lifetime already and have remained part of popular repertoire until the present.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

W\u00f6hrmann\u2019s poems have simple, sometimes loosely rhyming end rhymes.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

W\u00f6hrmann wrote many verses of no particular artistic value for albums and calendars. In the 1920s, W\u00f6hrmann penned one-act comedies like J\u00fcri ja Mari, ehk peremees perenaise ametis<\/i> (\u2018J\u00fcri and Mari or the Master in the Role of the Mistress\u2019) and Meie Mari pulm<\/i> (\u2018Our Mari\u2019s Wedding\u2019) and paraphrases of fairy tales.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The obituary published in the newspaper Eesti P\u00e4evaleht<\/i> in 1934 called W\u00f6hrmann an undeservedly overshadowed poet whose creation sometimes approached the level of Heinrich Heine, the greatest paragon of Estonian lyricists of his generation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
