At the University of Tartu, he defended the master\u2019s thesis <em>Ekstrapolatiivne kirjutamine: tulevikukirjutuse poeetikast<\/em> (\u2018Extrapolative Fiction: On the Poetics of Science Fiction\u2019, 2004) and the doctoral thesis <em>Kirjanduse lepitav otstarve<\/em> (\u2018The Reconciliatory Purpose of Literature\u2019, 2009). Tomberg belongs to the Research Group of Contemporary Estonian Culture and works as associate professor of Estonian literature at the University of Tartu.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHis main research areas are related to literary theory and science fiction and fantasy but also to poetics and philosophy of literature. One of Tomberg\u2019s interests has been cyberpunk and William Gibson\u2019s creation. Tomberg has translated literary theory, written literary and cultural criticism, plays (for example, <em>Aurora temporalis<\/em> together with <a data-url=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/a\/andreasw\" href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/a\/andreasw\" title=\"\">andreas w<\/a>, premiered in 2002 at Tartu Theatre Lab) and short prose (the ten-part series of stories Faddei Bulgarini k\u00fcmme soont \u2013 \u2018Faddei Bulgarin\u2019s Ten Veins\u2019 \u2013 in the prose collection Mitte-Tartu \u2013 \u2018Non-Tartu\u2019 -, 2012). Jaak Tomberg has also been the editor of the Tartu avant-garde journal <em>VIHIK<\/em>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tTomberg has received the annual award of the newspaper Sirp (2009), the annual award of the Science Fiction Research Association for the best research article (\u201cOn the \u201cDouble Vision\u201d of mimetic realism and science-fictional estrangement in William Gibson\u2019s \u201cBigend trilogy\u201d\u201d which was published in the journal Science Fiction Studies in 2014), the title of Tartu Culture Reporter (2017) and the University of Tartu Badge of Distinction (2023).\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>A.
