Jakob M\u00e4ndmets (29 July 1871 \u2013 25 December 1930) was a writer and journalist.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tHe was born on Suurepere farm in Paik\u00fcla village, K\u00e4rla parish, Saaremaa Island, as the tenth child of the family. Diseases had earlier taken seven children from the family; therefore, the parents took particular care of their last son Jakob. The writer had beautiful memories of his childhood, and, decades later, he used many motifs in his creation. He received the first instruction in literacy at home, thereafter, went to K\u00e4rla parish school. Books were appreciated at M\u00e4ndmets\u2019 home. After K\u00e4rla parish school, Jakob M\u00e4ndmets studied at Kaarma Teachers Seminary, which he completed in 1888.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tHe became a schoolteacher near his home at Karida village in K\u00e4rla parish. After a year of service, he had to leave because of conflicts with the local pastor. From 1892, M\u00e4ndmets worked for ten years as a teacher in Kose parish. In this period, he began to publish realist stories about village life, initially in periodicals.\u00a0 His first book was a melodramatic village story Lepituse ingel<\/em> (\u2018Angel of Reconciliation\u2019, 1899). In 1903, having fallen into disfavour with the Kose pastor H\u00f6rschelmann, Jakob M\u00e4ndmets settled in Tallinn and began to work as a journalist there. First, he worked for the newspaper Uus Aeg<\/em>, after its closure in 1905, he continued working mostly for the newspaper P\u00e4evaleht<\/em> and for shorter periods, for other newspapers. Jakob M\u00e4ndmets was a member of the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union from 1922. His grandson was the natural scientist Endel Lippmaa.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tJakob M\u00e4ndmets attracted attention in the first decades of the 20th century with collections of stories about everyday village life in Saaremaa Island. He has also written novels, novellas and fragments. He has also published plays and numerous essays and articles.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n
