\n\tHindrek Rikand (22. XII 1874\u201327. IV 1940) was a postal worker, poet, and children\u2019s author.\n<\/p>\n

\n\tRikand was born in P\u00f5lva parish, V\u00f5ru County. He studied at Kanepi parish school, graduated from V\u00f5ru county school and worked in the postal and telegraphy field in V\u00f5ru, Riga, and Tallinn. Rikand was the first head of the Estonian Post and organized the printing of the newly founded country\u2019s first postage stamps. He coined the word ringh\u00e4\u00e4ling<\/em> (\u2018broadcasting\u2019) in Estonian. After retirement, Rikand worked on the Esperanto language, composing the first Estonian-Esperanto language dictionary. He passed away in Tallinn.\n<\/p>\n

\n\tAt the turn of the 20th century, Hindrek Rikand published poems in the newspaper Postimees and magazine Linda. As Rikand was energetic and interested in culture, he participated actively in the Riga Estonian community while he was living there \u2013 he conducted choirs and staged plays. At the beginning of the 20th century, several of his written or translated children\u2019s Christmas plays were published in print. In 1920, he published the two-page work V\u00e4lguvaimukesed<\/em> (\u2018Lightning Sparkies\u2019) explaining the working principle of the telegraph \u2013 it was the first popular science work for children by an Estonian author. In 1935, the publishing house Loodus organized a children\u2019s literature contest to collect new positive children\u2019s novels with local subject matter. Rikand\u2019s romantic nationalist fairy tale collection Rahvavanema lapsed<\/em> (\u2018The Children of the People\u2019s Elder\u2019, 1935, re-print in 2004) came in second and was published in the series \u2018Children\u2019s Book by Loodus\u2019. J\u00fcri Parij\u00f5gi<\/a>, an Estonian children\u2019s writer, called it the decade\u2019s best fairy tale book. Rikand later published the fairy tale Hirmutekitav auto<\/em> (\u2018The Scary Car\u2019, 1937) in the series \u2018Golden Home\u2019, in addition to several poems and V\u00f5ro language fairy tales in magazines.\n<\/p>\n

\n\tOne fairy tale from the collection \u2018The Children of the People\u2019s Elder\u2019 is being read by children nowadays as well in the form of the novel P\u00fcha mardikas<\/em> (\u2018The Holy Beetle\u2019, 2010), which tells the story of a scarab etched into the king\u2019s throne who comes to life and warns the king of danger to the kingdom.\n<\/p>\n
