In 1959, he completed Tallinn Secondary School no. 22 and, thereafter, Tallinn Technical School of Fishery. He was a worker at a fishery plant but continued his studies at Tallinn Pedagogical Institute from which he graduated as a teacher of Estonian language and literature. After graduation, he worked as a journalist for the newspaper <em>N\u00f5ukogude \u00d5petaja<\/em>; from 1975 he was head of the essays and articles department of the journal <em>Looming<\/em>.\u00a0 From 1998 until 2023 Raun was chief editor of the historical journal <em>Tuna<\/em>. He was a member of the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union from 1992 until his death.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\">Raun made his debut with poems in the magazine Noorus in 1963. His first poetry collection <em>Hobusel on t\u00e4na s\u00fcnnip\u00e4ev<\/em> (\u2018The Horse has Birthday Today\u2019) appeared in 1973. Critics expressed opposing opinions on the collection. Writer Jaan Kaplinski praised the debutant who did not care about \u201ctraditional depth\u201d but tried to discover \u201cpoetry in ordinary people\u2019s everyday life in their habitual surroundings.\u201d After that, there was a longer pause in Raun\u2019s creation until the novel <em>K\u00f5rvaltegelased<\/em> (\u2018Subsidiary Characters\u2019) appeared in 1990.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\">Raun published six poetry collections, three novels \u2013 <em>K\u00f5rvaltegelased<\/em>, <em>Kuningas, kes tahtis olla narr<\/em> (\u2018The King Who Wanted to Be a Jester\u2019, 1995), <em>Test<\/em> (\u2018Test\u2019, 2000), the collection of articles <em>Vaikne eestlane<\/em> (\u2018Quiet Estonian\u2019, 1998), the fairy tale book <em>Kass nimega Inimene<\/em> (\u2018The Cat Named Human\u2019, 2015) and the books of memoirs <em>Vaimu vend<\/em> (\u2018Brother of Spirit\u2019, 2015), <em>Tuba number kaheksa<\/em> (\u2018Room Number Eight\u2019, 2016) and <em>Tunaeile<\/em> (\u2018The Day Before Yesterday\u2019). In critics\u2019 opinion, Raun\u2019s best poetry collection is <em>Silmlill<\/em> (\u2018Eye Flower\u2019, 1996). The novel <em>Kuningas, kes tahtis olla narr<\/em> describes the first-person character\u2019s searches for himself during a dreamlike train journey from Barcelona to Tallinn. One of the characteristic features of Ott Raun\u2019s creation is playfulness.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\">In 2003 Ott Raun was awarded the Order of the White Star, Class 4.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><em>L.
