He has worked for the culture newspaper <em>Sirp ja Vasar<\/em> and the humour and satire magazine Pikker, been the chief editor of the culture newspaper <em>Sirp<\/em>, dramaturge at the Old Town Studio theatre in Tallinn and repertoire manager at Tallinnfilm, later a freelancer. Hei is a member of the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union from 1984.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">He began his creative path as a cartoonist \u2013 the collection <em>Siin triumfikaare all<\/em> (\u2018Here under the Arc of Triumph\u2019) appeared in 1977; thereafter, he began to publish humorous stories in the press. He stood out with witty travesties. His parodies and short pieces have been gathered into the collection <em>Eliase lohe. Valik tekste viimasest ja eelviimasest ajast<\/em> (\u2018Elijah\u2019s Dragon. A Selection of Texts from the Times Last and Before the Last\u2019, 1999)<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">Kall has written several comedies, mainly for the Old Town Studio and its successor Old Baskin Theatre, for example, <em>L\u00f5unavaheaeg<\/em> (\u2018Lunch Break\u2019, staged in 1984, Juhan Smuul Literary Prize in 1985), <em>Lihtne ja ilus<\/em> (\u2018Simple and Beautiful\u2019, staged in 1987), and the <em>Pr\u00fcgikast<\/em> (\u2018Dustbin\u2019) trilogy which reflected the peculiarities of the era: <em>Pr\u00fcgikast ehk Alguse asi<\/em> (\u2018Dustbin or the Matter of Beginning\u2019, in cooperation with Eino Baskin, staged in 1993), <em>Pr\u00fcgikast 2 ehk P\u00f5hi paistab<\/em> (\u2018Dustbin 2 or We\u2019ve Reached the Bottom\u2019, staged in 1995) and <em>Pr\u00fcgikast 3 ehk Eesti masurka<\/em> (\u2018Dustbin 3 or the Estonian Mazurka\u2019, staged in 2009). Kall is noticeable first of all for his good situational and character humour.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">Kall was one of the scriptwriters of the popular puppet show on topical political issues, <em>Pehmed ja karvased<\/em> (\u2018The Soft and Hairy Ones\u2019) which was aired on television from 2001\u20132013. He has also written the script for the television series <em>M klubi<\/em> (\u2018M Club\u2019, 1995\u20131998, Suur Vanker (Big Dipper) Prize for the best scriptwriter, 1996). He has been the scriptwriter of several animated cartoons, puppet and feature films: <em>V\u00e4rvipliiatsid<\/em> (\u2018Coloured Pencils\u2019, 1973, director Avo Paistik), <em>S\u00f5lm<\/em> (\u2018Knot\u2019, 1983, director Kalju Kivi); <em>Kevadine k\u00e4rbes<\/em> (\u2018Spring Fly\u2019, 1986, directors Hardi Volmer, Riho Unt); <em>Rahu t\u00e4nav<\/em> (\u2018Peace Street\u2019, 1991, director Roman Baskin), <em>Minu Leninid<\/em> (\u2018My Lenins\u2019, 1997, in cooperation with Hardi Volmer and Ott Sandrak; director Hardi Volmer; the script won the audiovisual arts annual award of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia).<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">In addition, Kall has translated numerous plays and prose works from Russian and written fore- and afterwords for them, for example, N. Gogol, \u2018Viy\u2019 (<em>\u0412\u0438\u0439<\/em>), \u2018Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka\u2019 (<em>\u0412\u0435\u0447\u0435\u0440\u0430 \u043d\u0430 \u0445\u0443\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0435 \u0431\u043b\u0438\u0437 \u0414\u0438\u043a\u0430\u043d\u044c\u043a\u0438<\/em>) and \u2018The Government Inspector\u2019 (<em>\u0420\u0435\u0432\u0438\u0437\u043e\u0440<\/em>); A. Genis, \u2018Dovlatov and his Environs\u2019 (<em>\u0414\u043e\u0432\u043b\u0430\u0442\u043e\u0432 \u0438 \u043e\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0442\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/em>) and \u2018Reading Hours: Kamasutra for Book Lovers\u2019 (<em>\u0423\u0440\u043e\u043a\u0438 \u0447\u0442\u0435\u043d\u0438\u044f: \u043a\u0430\u043c\u0430\u0441\u0443\u0442\u0440\u0430 \u043a\u043d\u0438\u0436\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0430<\/em>), Svetlana Alexievich, \u2018War\u2019s Unwomanly Face\u2019 (<em>\u0423 \u0432\u043e\u0439\u043d\u044b \u043d\u0435 \u0436\u0435\u043d\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0435 \u043b\u0438\u0446\u043e<\/em>), M. Moskvina \u2018Romance with the Moon\u2019 (<em>\u0420\u043e\u043c\u0430\u043d \u0441 \u043b\u0443\u043d\u043e\u0439<\/em>), I. Pozharskaya, \u2018Yuri Nikulin, in an Almost Funny Way\u2019 (<em>\u042e\u0440\u0438\u0439 \u041d\u0438\u043a\u0443\u043b\u0438\u043d<\/em>).<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">Kall has written literary and theatre criticism and compiled the caricature album <em>Kuueteistk\u00fcmnem\u00e4ng<\/em> (\u2018Game of Sixteen\u2019) and the collection <em>P\u00e4rnograafia: Priit P\u00e4rna joonistusi 1964\u20132006<\/em> (\u2018P\u00e4rnography: Priit P\u00e4rn\u2019s Drawings 1964\u20132006\u2019, 2006).<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">Toomas Kall has received the second prize at international caricature exhibitions in Skopje (1977 and 1978) and grand prix at the caricature exhibition of the Soviet Union in Leningrad (1981), the Oskar Luts Humour Prize (1996) and the Meie Mats Humour Prize (1998). He has also been awarded the Order of the National Coat of Arms, Class 4 (2006), and the Aleksander Kurtna Translation Award (2019).<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">A.
