VII 1956) is a prose writer, playwright, artist, theater producer, and filmmaker. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: verdana, geneva;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">He was born in K\u00e4ru in the Rapla County. He studied at K\u00e4ru Primary School from 1963\u20131967 and at Rapla Secondary School from 1978\u20131986, and later received his art education from Tartu Art School. From 1978\u20131986, he worked as an artist and stage designer at the Tartu Student Club S\u00f5prus (\u2018<em>noortemaja \u201cS\u00f5prus\u201d<\/em>\u2018) and at Vanemuine Theatre, also occasionally doing the odd job. He was the stage designer at Rakvere Theatre from 1987\u20131990 before becoming a freelancer. His first stage design was for the production <em>S\u00fcdamevalu<\/em> (\u2018Heartache\u2019, staged by Kaarel Ird and Evald Hermak\u00fcla) at Vanemuine Theatre in 1981. He has since made over 100 stage designs, including designs for eight operas. He has also staged his own productions, some of which were from his own texts. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Together with Toomas Saarepera, Ervin \u00d5unapuu wrote and produced the plays <em>Sannikovi maa armastajad<\/em> (\u2018Lovers of the Land of Sannikov\u2019), <em>Kruppi viimane lint<\/em> (\u2018Krupp\u2019s Last Tape\u2019), <em>Van Goghi tundmatud aastad<\/em> (\u2018Van Gogh\u2019s Unknown Years\u2019), and <em>Noa laev<\/em> (\u2018Noah\u2019s Ark\u2019) in 1994 and 1995. He was also writer-producer, together with Toomas Hussar, of the plays <em>Immelmanni s\u00f5lm<\/em> (\u2018Immelmann\u2019s Knot\u2019, staged in 1996) and <em>Tule minuga lendama<\/em> (\u2018Come Flying with Me\u2019, staged in 1998). <em>Surm ooperis<\/em> (\u2018Death at the Opera\u2019), written by \u00d5unapuu, was staged in 1999. The latest \u00d5unapuu drama <em>Mina, Luther<\/em> (\u2018Me, Luther\u2019) was staged and designed in 2014 by the author himself. Ervin \u00d5unapuu has won drama awards from the Estonian Theatre Association on several occasions. <\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00d5unapuu\u2019s first book, the novel <em>Olivia meistriklass<\/em> (\u2018Olivia. Master Class\u2019, 1996), was well received and praised by critics. It remains one of \u00d5unapuu\u2019s most famous literary works. In 1997, a chamber opera based on the novel was produced (libretto, producer: Peeter Jalakas; music: Lepo Sumera; stage design: Ervin \u00d5unapuu). Later, \u00d5unapuu received additional praise for his short stories, which were published primarily in collections bearing the title <em>Eesti gootika<\/em> (\u2018Estonian Gothic\u2019). He won the Tuglas Short Story Prize in 2000 for his short story <em>V\u00e4ike Lilli Noarootsist<\/em> (\u2018Little Lilli from Noarootsi\u2019) and the Gailit Short Story Prize for the story <em>Kui ingel laskus<\/em> (\u2018When the Angel Fell\u2019).\u00a0<\/span>His novel <em>\u00d5htu saabumine teistesse tubadesse<\/em> (\u2018Evening Arrives at the Other Rooms\u2019, 2022) continues with the leitmotif of \u00d5unapuu\u2019s oeuvre: sharp criticism of Lutheranism.<br><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: small;\">In \u00d5unapuu\u2019s prose pieces, an irresistibly strong sense of the unknown and the mysteriousness of life are in conflict with human stupidity that is manifested mainly in the everyday tragedy of Estonian village life and institutionalized Christianity. The characters experience the world passionately, physically, and sometimes violently; nightmares and visions rule over them, and the mood is grotesque. <\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00d5unapuu has been a screenwriter, director, and set designer for several films. He debuted in 1977 at the Tartu Autumn Exhibition as a visual artist and later gained attention for his surrealist watercolors. He has since participated in several group and personal exhibitions. He has also created television plays and radio dramas, designed books, and published articles in journals. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I. M. (Translated by M.
