IV 1900 – 16. VI 1984) was a prolific prose writer.

He was born on the Muraste estate in Harjumaa county. He studied at Rannamõisa and Tallinn. He worked in various places as a gardener. In 1941 he was secretary at the editorial offices of the journal Viisnurk, and during the German occupation worked on Virumaa Teataja. In the nineteen-fifties he was a professional writer in Tallinn. He was a member of the Estonian Writers’ Union from 1937. He died in Tallinn, and is buried in the Forest Cemetery. His daughter Reet Krusten (b. 1934) is a well-known scholar of children’s literature.

He made his debut in 1920 in the journal Ilo. His first collection of short prose, Kanarbik (Heather, 1927) contains mainly observations of life from a psychological standpoint, with eccentric characters often as the focus. His first novel, Mineviku jahil (‘In Search of the Past’, 1929) won third prize in the Loodus publishing house novel competition in 1929. In that work too, Krusten delves deep into the main character’s psyche; at the centre of attention is the downfall of a plutocrat enriched by the world war and revolution. The protagonists’ complex internal life is also in focus in the psychological novel Org Mägedi armastus (‘The Love of Org Mägedi’, 1939). The best of his short prose of the thirties is contained in the collection Pime armastus (‘Blind Love’, 1941). Characteristic of Krusten’s prose is a melancholy undertone, a psychological treatment laced with grotesque and ironic touches.

In the prose of the forties and fifties one can note the Soviet schemes and fixed motifs typical of the period. Subject matter from the recent past dominates the themes and rural settings. The collections Pöördepunktid (‘Turning Points’, 1946) and Rahu nimel (‘In the Name of Peace’, 1951) contain a considerable portion of his post-war short prose. At the centre of the family novel Pekside raamat (‘The Book of the Peksi Family’, 1946) is the story of a farming family from the thirties to the early forties.

An eloquent example of the panoramic novel characteristic of the period is Noorte südamed (‘Young Hearts’, I 1954, II 1956), which depicts Estonian village society before and after the 1905 revolution on an epic and multi-layered scale. Krusten used traditional, autobiographical and documentary material. The title of the work refers to the love story, with all its obstacles, of Jüri, an indentured peasant on an estate, and his bride, symbolizing a new awareness of life.

Krusten’s short prose of the late fifties accentuates the transformation of Estonian literature and its emancipation from vulgar sociological clichés of the Stalinist era. The short stories and miniatures are striking in their lyricism and intimacy, moving mainly in the circles of family and nature (such as the collections Õnnetu armastus – ‘Unhappy Love’, 1957 – and Kevadet otsimas – ‘Searching for Spring’, 1960). An important place in Krusten’s work of this period is taken by the psychological novel of the individual and of ideas Nagu piisake meres (‘Like a Drop in the Ocean’, 1962). At the centre of this novel is a sensitive human nature against the background of world wars and Fascist ideology. The theme of violence is dealt with by Krusten in the novella Okupatsioon (‘The Occupation’, 1969). Short prose is a major element in his work of the later period as well.

Krusten also wrote short prose for children, such as the collections Hilised võililled (‘Late Dandelions’, 1958), Piibar (‘Shepherd’s Horn’, 1968) and Ühe tehiskoera seiklused (‘Adventures of an Artificial Dog’, 1975), which are striking for their lively and vivid storytelling and humour.

Krusten became a Merited Writer of the Estonian SSR in 1959, a People’s Writer of the Estonian SSR in 1972. He obtained the annual Estonian SSR State Prize for the novella Okupatsioon (‘The Occupation’, 1970) and the Fiedebert Tuglas Short Story prize for Rio Grande in 1984.

A.
