III 1936) was a schoolteacher and journalist who also wrote poems and prose.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">Luiga was born in Valgj\u00e4rve\u00a0parish in V\u00f5ru county, the son of a schoolmaster. Even as a boy of ten or eleven he started writing poems, because there was not much reading matter. Luiga sent his first poems to newspapers as a teenager. After leaving the parish school he was a schoolteacher at \u00c4ksi and a collaborator on J.V.\u00a0Jannsen\u2019s newspaper <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">Eesti Postimees. <\/span><\/i>He also collaborated on K.A. Hermann\u2019s paper <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">Olevik<\/span><\/i>, sometimes under a female pseudonym. Later Luiga went to work in the editorial office of <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">Olevik <\/span><\/i>for a short time. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">In 1891 Luiga emigrated to Russia, first to the settlement of Simbirsk as a parish schoolteacher, then four years later to the same post in Tobolsk\u00a0in Western Siberia. After ten years away from his homeland he initially came back to work on the newspaper <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">Ristirahva P\u00fchap\u00e4evaleht<\/span><\/i>, then to be chief editor of <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">P\u00e4evaleht<\/span><\/i>. From 1908 to 1934, in the position of editor-in-chief, Luiga developed it, together with Hans Rebane, into one of the most widely-read papers in Estonia.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">Luiga\u2019s first book was a collection of stories in the national-romantic vein, <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">Muruneid <\/span><\/i>(\u2018Maid of the Grass\u2019, 1886). Together with other similar early prose works and poetry collections (<i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">Laulud<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">\u00a0\u2013 \u2018<\/span><\/i>Songs\u2019 -, 1888;\u00a0<i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">Uued laulud<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">\u00a0\u2013<\/span><\/i><i>\u00a0<\/i><i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">\u2018<\/span><\/i>New Songs\u2019 -, 1901), it found readers, but earned reproaches from the critics for its artistic weakness. Of Georg Eduard Luiga\u2019s poems the best known is <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">Lapsep\u00f5lvekodu<\/span><\/i>, (\u2018Childhood Home\u2019), which is known for the words of the first verse: \u201c<i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">S\u00e4\u00e4l, kus rukkiv\u00e4li lagendikul heljub\u2026<\/span><\/i>\u201d (\u2018Where the rye-field floats in the clearing\u2026\u2019). <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">In 1912 Luiga published a collection of 17 stories, <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">V\u00e4givallamaal <\/span><\/i>(\u2018In the Land of Violence\u2019). The work describes the lives of emigrants from Estonia in Siberia, and is based on real events and persons. The book was warmly received. Words of praise also came from August Kitzberg, who noted, however, that not all the stories were of an even quality. Later critics have taken note of George Eduard Luiga poems, saying that the author had a lively imagination and a facility for finding a suitable forms for the poems. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">In 1911 Luiga produced a travelogue, <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">Mere taga v\u00f5\u00f5rsil <\/span><\/i>(\u2018Abroad Beyond the Sea\u2019) with his impressions of Denmark and Norway.
