\n\tIllmar Sikem\u00e4e (original name Helmut B\u00f6tker, 18.\/5. XII 1914 \u2013 25. VII 1998) was a prose writer and commentator whose primary contribution to Estonian culture was the collection of sketches Kirjad Vargam\u00e4elt<\/em> (\u2018Letters from Vargam\u00e4e\u2019, 1962).<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tSikem\u00e4e was born in Albu parish in J\u00e4rvamaa county into a family of farm labourers. He was the nephew of Jakob Sikenberg, the prototype of Oru Pearu, the main antagonistic character in Anton Hansen Tammsaare\u2019s classic novel sequence T\u00f5de ja \u00d5igus<\/em> (\u2018Truth and Justice\u2019). This was the source of Sikem\u00e4e\u2019s ability and opportunity to describe the scene of Tammsaare\u2019s novel as a living reality and at the same time to bring out the links between life and literature.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tSikem\u00e4e attended primary school number 26 in Tallinn and in 1935 graduated from Gustav Adolf Gymnasium. After that he worked for a few years as an accountant and journalist. In 1941 he was mobilized into the Red Army. Sikem\u00e4e\u2019s poems from the front date from the war years. From 1945 to 1990 he was a member of the CPSU. In the decades after the war Sikem\u00e4e worked in literary posts in several periodicals.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tHaving begun his literary career under various pen-names, Sikem\u00e4e earned recognition for mild yet consistently direct and truthful nature of his writing. Life-like realism dominates the short prose in the collections Teekond j\u00e4tkub<\/em> (\u2018The Road Continues\u2019, 1951) and N\u00e4oga tuleviku poole<\/em> (\u2018Facing the Future\u2019, 1961). The critical assessment of conditions, Tolm<\/em> (\u2018Dust\u2019), which appeared in the journal Looming in 1955, irritated Soviet officials and dogmatic critics. In 1969 Sikem\u00e4e published a selection of stories and fragments, Sada lugu<\/em> (\u2018A Hundred Stories\u2019), and in 1980 Vasaku k\u00e4e lood<\/em> (\u2018Left-handed Stories\u2019). Sikem\u00e4e\u2019s poems have been made into song lyrics. He was also active as a critic; he took issue on questions of the development of the Estonian language, and translated fiction from German.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n
