He received his education in a class specialising in literature at Tartu Secondary School No. 8 and Tartu State University where he studied Estonian philology and journalism. From 1976\u20131977 he worked as editor of children\u2019s and young adult literature for Eesti Raamat publishers, 1977\u20131986 editor of the journal Looming, 1988\u20131990 dramaturge of the Estonian Youth Theatre, 1991\u20131992 head of information office at the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 1992\u20131993 worked for the newspapers Eesti Ekspress, Eesti Aeg and Hommikuleht, 1997\u20132005 editor-in-chief of the culture newspaper Sirp and 2005\u20132016 editor-in-chief of the literary journal Looming. From 2016\u20132018 Mutt received the writer\u2019s salary from the state. <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0.08in;margin-bottom:0.08in\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background:#ffffff\"><span style=\"line-height:100%\"><font style=\"12pt\"><font style=\"12pt\">Mihkel Mutt has been a member of the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union since 1980, being a member of its board for several times; a member of the Estonian PEN-club since 1992, has been its president.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0.08in;margin-bottom:0.08in\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background:#ffffff\"><span style=\"line-height:100%\"><font style=\"12pt\"><font style=\"12pt\">Mutt made his literary debut in 1966 when the school yearbook <i>Tipa-Tapa<\/i> published his first translation of a short story from English. During his university studies, he participated in the activities of Tartu Young Authors\u2019 Association. He attracted greater attention in the 1970s\u201380s, at the beginning of his career as a prose writer. In his later creation, which is considered a critical and ironical view of a parodied society, and which has also been called alternative literature, he has expressed himself through his <i>alter ego<\/i> Fabian who acts as a connecting link between his works. <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0.08in;margin-bottom:0.08in\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background:#ffffff\"><span style=\"line-height:100%\"><font style=\"12pt\"><font style=\"12pt\">Mutt\u2019s works have been translated into Finnish, Russian, English, German, and other languages. A television film directed by Ingo Normet has been made after his novel <i>Pingviin ja raisakass<\/i> (\u2018The Penguin and the Carrion Cat\u2019).<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0.08in;margin-bottom:0.08in\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background:#ffffff\"><span style=\"line-height:100%\"><font style=\"12pt\"><font style=\"12pt\">Mihkel Mutt has translated Tom Stoppard\u2019s, Arnold Wesker\u2019s, Neil Simon\u2019s, Eugene O\u2019Neill\u2019s and David Pownall\u2019s plays from English and written scripts for television. He has been a fertile literary and theatre critic and a permanent columnist of the newspapers Eesti P\u00e4evaleht and Postimees.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0.08in;margin-bottom:0.08in\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background:#ffffff\"><span style=\"line-height:100%\"><font style=\"12pt\"><font style=\"12pt\">In 1981 and 2008 Mihkel Mutt received the Friedebert Tuglas Short Story Prize respectively for his stories <i>\u00d5pilane Fabian<\/i> (\u2018Student Fabian) and <i>Siseemigrant<\/i> (\u2018The Internal Emigrant\u2019), in 1987 the Juhan Smuul Award for the book <i>N\u00e4\u00e4rivana<\/i> (\u2018Father Cristmas\u2019, published in English in 1990), in 1994 and 2013 the Virumaa Literary Prize respectively for the books <i>Rahvusvaheline mees<\/i> (\u2018The International Man\u2019) and <i>Kooparahvas l\u00e4heb ajalukku<\/i> (\u2018The Cavemen Chronicle\u2019, published in English ion 2015) and in 2013 the Eduard Vilde Literary Award for <i>Eesti \u00fcmberl\u00f5ikaja<\/i> (\u2018The Estonian Circumciser\u2019). For the latter, he was also awarded the title of the Writer of the Year.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0.08in;margin-bottom:0.08in\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background:#ffffff\"><span style=\"line-height:100%\"><font style=\"12pt\"><font style=\"12pt\">In 1999, he earned the Literature Endowment Annual Award for <i>Muti tabloid<\/i> (\u2018Mutt\u2019s Tabloid\u2019) and in 2014 for <i>\u00d5htumaa Eesti<\/i> (\u2018Occidental Estonia\u2019). In 2020 he received the Cultural Endowment Annual Award for literature for his collection of essays <i>Maailmas peegelduv veetilk. Arutlusi Eestist, kultuurist, ajaloost<\/i> (\u2018A Drop of Water Reflected in the World. Reflections of Estonia, Culture, History\u2019), which was published in the series <i>Eesti m\u00f5ttelugu<\/i> (\u2018History of Estonian Thought\u2019). <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0.08in;margin-bottom:0.08in\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background:#ffffff\"><span style=\"line-height:100%\"><font style=\"12pt\"><font style=\"12pt\">He has also earned several theatrical awards: in 1978 and 1982 the State Criticism Award for theatre criticism, in 1994 and 2000 the criticism award of the Estonian Theatre Union, in 1990 the Aleksander Kurtna Translation Award for the translation of Tom Stoppard\u2019s <i>Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead <\/i>into Estonian.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0.08in;margin-bottom:0.08in\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background:#ffffff\"><span style=\"line-height:100%\"><font style=\"12pt\"><font style=\"12pt\">In 2000 he received the Order of the White Star, 3rd Class, and the Estonian Cultural Endowment scholarship <i>Ela ja s\u00e4ra<\/i> (\u2018Live and Shine\u2019), in 2001 the Concord Award of the Open Estonia Foundation.
