From 1967\u22121968, he studied Estonian philology at the University of Tartu, from 1969\u20131971 theatre studies at Leningrad Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinematography and from 1976\u20131980 ethnography at the universities of Turku and Helsinki. Due to marriage, Ilus lived in Finland and the US from 1976\u20131979; thereafter returned to Estonia. He participated in underground activities against the Soviet regime. After the restoration of Estonia\u2019s independence, he helped to restore the Estonian Defence League. He is a member of the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union from 1997.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">Ilus began to write poems in the late 1960s. His verses appeared in underground collections Marm, Kolme mehe laulud (\u2018Songs of Three Men\u2019), \u00d5itsev tuul (\u2018Flowering Wind\u2019), Jumala tuul (\u2018God\u2019s Wind\u2019), Kuller I (\u2018Courier\u2019 I) T\u00f5let I and II. Peeter Ilus is the author of several books of poetry. As a poet, Ilus is also known as the author of lyrics of several famous pop songs, e.g., Raagus s\u00f5nad (\u2018Barren Words\u2019, performed by Marju Kuut) and Vana vaksal (\u2018The Old Station\u2019, performed by Ivo Linna). Ilus\u2019 poetry reveals melancholy lyricism and ethnic nostalgia combined with witty wording skills.\u00a0 His first poetry collection L\u00f5bu ja himu (\u2018Fun and Desire\u2019) was published in the series of Mana Luuleraamat (\u2018Mana Book of Poetry\u2019) in Los Angeles in 1977. In Estonia, Ilus\u2019 collection of selected poems from 1966\u20131988, Korjatud luuletusi (\u2018Gathered Poems\u2019), was published in 1990.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">Peeter Ilus has written and published renderings of the Kyrgyz epic Manas (2012) and the Tartar epic folk poem Yedigey (2019).\u00a0 Both were issued by Penikoorem, a publishing company founded by himself, which also published Ilus\u2019 later poetry collections. This company founded by Ilus in 1985 has also published works of Ilmar Laaban and Jaan Oks and a number of translations of Japanese literature. Even before founding his own publishing company, Ilus participated in editing and compiling of several publications.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">He had translated into Estonian Christopher Marlowe\u2019s play Edward II (1983, together with Krista Mits) and the poetry collection of Ivan Nikitin, Fyodor Tyutchev and Afanasy Fet Ilmsi ja ulmsi (\u2018In Reality and Dreams\u2019, 1977, together with Ly Seppel and Andres Ehin).<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">Peeter Ilus is the compiler and editor of the transactions of the Estonian Heritage Society.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom:0in\" lang=\"en-GB\">\n\t<em><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">L.
