{"id":35,"date":"2024-04-03T23:39:16","date_gmt":"2024-04-03T20:39:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/luisevaher\/"},"modified":"2024-04-04T00:11:13","modified_gmt":"2024-04-03T21:11:13","slug":"luisevaher","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/v\/luisevaher\/","title":{"rendered":"Luise Vaher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Luise Vaher (n\u00e9e Kapstas; 3 September \/ 21 August 1912 \u2013 14 February 1992) was a prose writer.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tVaher was born in Valga County, attended school in Valga, studied at V\u00f5ru Teachers\u2019 Seminary and Valga Girls\u2019 Gymnasium. During the first Soviet occupation in 1940\u201341, she participated in establishing the Soviet rule, being, for instance, secretary of the executive committee of Valga County. She participated in the war as a frontline nurse in the Estonian Rifle Corps. Vaher worked as a newspaper editor in Valga and was head of the Department of Education in Valga County. He joined the Communist Party in 1948 but was expelled in 1950, being accused of kulak (big landowner) origin. Her membership in the party was restored in 1960. From 1960, Vaher was a professional writer, a member of the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union from 1961. She is buried in Viljandi.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tVaher\u2019s literary creation began with prose pieces published in the press. In 1957 and 1958, she received the second prize in the short story competition of the journal <em>Looming<\/em>. This was followed by the third prize of the novel competition for <em>Emaj\u00f5e jutustus<\/em> (\u2018The Story of the Emaj\u00f5gi River\u2019), which dealt with village life in the postwar years. The major part of her creation consists of novels: the trilogy <em>Rinde\u00f5de<\/em> (\u2018Frontline Nurse\u2019, 1965), <em>Tormip\u00f6\u00f6rises<\/em> (\u2018In the Whirl of the Tempest\u2019, 1982), <em>P\u00f5lev p\u00e4risosa<\/em> (\u2018The Burning Inheritance\u2019, 1987, the A. H. Tammsaare Literary Award), and the dilogy <em>P\u00e4eva palge ees<\/em> (\u2018In Broad Daylight\u2019, 1968, the third place in the novel competition of 1967) and <em>Meelespealillede h\u00f5ng<\/em> (\u2018The Fragrance of Forget-me-nots\u2019, 1983; the same novel, under the preliminary title <em>Ma purustasin p\u00e4ikese<\/em> (\u2018I Destroyed the Sun\u2019), received a consolation prize in the 1965 novel competition). Vaher\u2019s books are mostly concentrated on her personal experience and emotions and are set in the 1940s\u20131950s, dealing with choices related to the new political order, the war events and postwar society. The characteristic features of Vaher\u2019s creation are striving for a broad panorama and depiction of an enterprising female protagonist.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>A. K. (Translated by I.
