Dresen collaborated in <\/span><em style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small;line-height: 1.6em\">Literatura Mondo, La Nica Literatura Revuo, Norda Prismo <\/em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\">(1955-72), <\/span><em style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small;line-height: 1.6em\">Monda Kulturo, Heroldo de Esperanto, La Praktiko<\/em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\"> [Practice], <\/span><em style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small;line-height: 1.6em\">La Nova Epoko<\/em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\"> [The New Era], <\/span><em style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small;line-height: 1.6em\">La Suda Stelo, Fonto<\/em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\"> and other periodicals. She translated a great deal of poetry from the Estonian, Russian, Ukrainian and German.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\">A number of translations for <\/span><em style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small;line-height: 1.6em\">Estona Antologio: I<strong> <\/strong><\/em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\">[Estonian Anth.: I] (1932) were done with her sister, Helmi (1892-1941), who was murdered by the Nazis, having become Mayoress of Tallinn (<em>DL<\/em>, p. 398). Helmi also wrote poetry.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\">Although Hilda Dresen dedicated herself mainly to translation, eleven of her original poems were selected for <em>Dekdu Poetoj<\/em> [Eleven Poets] (1934). Her own collection of poetry, <em>Norda Naturo <\/em>[Northern Nature], appeared in 1967.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\">Dresen is above all a poet of nature contemplated through \u2019the innocent eyes of a child\u2019. Georgi Mihalkov (q.v.) comments (<\/span><em style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small;line-height: 1.6em\">BE<\/em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\">, pp. 27, 24-5) that her poems seem to radiate the silence and tranquillity of the North. \u2019Dresen paints the concrete details that characterize northern nature with delicacy and emotion. \u2026 the silver birch, the bird cherry, the northern lakes.\u2019<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\">Mihalkov also considers Dresen to be the first Esperanto poetess to enrich the literature \u2019with typically female tones, motifs, emotions\u2019 (<em>BE<\/em>, pp. 31-4<em>)<\/em>. He remarks that, although Dresen\u2019s themes are not very varied or her \u2019spectrum of senses\u2019 very wide, she nevertheless succeeds in displaying the lyricalness and tender emotion of the female spirit. On the other hand, Dresen\u2019s poetry is ruled by harmony and the outside world. She \u2019avoids meditation on the thoughts and feelings of the female soul\u2019, in contrast to Marjorie Boulton (q.v.) and Eli Urbanov\u00e1 (q.v.).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\">Tazio Carlevaro (q.v.) classifies Dresen\u2019s work as being on the periphery of influence from the Budapest School of writers (cf. Kalocsay, Baghy). He considers her the first outstanding female poet in Esperanto. Dresen\u2019s themes principally concern nature and emotional movements, which she develops with a somewhat melancholy, although never sentimental, tone (<\/span><em style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small;line-height: 1.6em\">EeP<\/em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\">, p. 148).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\">K\u00e1lm\u00e1n Kalocsay (q.v.) also commented on the melancholy in Dresen\u2019s poetry, as did Lajos T\u00e1rkony (q.v.), although William Auld (q.v.) (<\/span><em style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small;line-height: 1.6em\">PkS<\/em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\">, p. 49) does not share the same opinion, finding her \u2019positive, courageous, diligent\u2019. Auld picks out her poem \u2019Vento\u2019 [Wind] as exemplifying her philosophy of life. \u2019\u2026 how unconventional (<\/span><em style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small;line-height: 1.6em\">ne\u015dablona<\/em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\">) Hilda\u2019s mind was to the end\u2019, he wrote (<\/span><em style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small;line-height: 1.6em\">PkS<\/em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\">, p. 48).<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\">Dresen has translated to Esperanto all important Estonian poets.\u00a0Auld calculates (<em>PkS<\/em>, p. 47) some 122 poems from Estonian.\u00a0Of particular note is her trans. (1975) of pts of the Estonian national epic poem\u00a0<em>Kalevipoeg<\/em>\u00a0(1856\/61, by Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald), and poetry of Marie Under. Under\u2019s\u00a0<em>Elektitaj Versa\u0135oj<\/em>\u00a0[Sel. Poems] came out in 1929, and her<em>\u00a0Sonetoj<\/em>\u00a01917 [Sonnets 1917] was published after Dresen\u2019s death in 1988, although she had done the work in the 1930s; Under\u2019s poems \u2019\u201cSina \u00fctled\u201c I\u2019 as \u2019Vi Diras: I\u2019, rpt in\u00a0<em>NEK<\/em>\u00a0(1991). William Auld (<em>PkS<\/em>, p. 48) praises in particular Dresen\u2019s translation of Juhan (Johannes) Liiv\u2019s lyrical poetry in\u00a0<em>Al Abelujo \u011ci Flugas<\/em>\u00a0[To a Beehive It Flies] (1980).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\">Dresen\u2019s other main works on translation from Estonian are:\u00a0<\/span><em>Horizontoj\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\">[Horizons] (1931, poetry by the modern revolutionary poet Johannes Barbarus.\u00a0<\/span><em>Estonaj Kantoj<\/em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\">\u00a0[Estonian songs] (collaborator, 1931).\u00a0<\/span><em>Estona Antologio: I<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;font-size: small\">[Estonian Anth.: I] (ed., trans.
