IX 1962) is a poet and prose writer.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom:0.28cm\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\">Kauksi \u00dclle was born in V\u00f5ru, educated in R\u00f5uge and V\u00f5ru as well as the <font style=\"11pt\">department of journalism<\/font> at the State University of Tartu, where she graduated in 1986. She has worked for the journal <i>Kultuur ja Elu<\/i>, for V\u00f5ru Radio, and at the Fenno-Ugria foundation. She joined the Tartu NAK (Young Authors\u2019 Association) in 1984 and the Writers\u2019 Union in 1990. She has won the Bernard Kangro literature award (1992), the Order of the White Star, class IV (2006), the Woman of the Year title (2008) and the Juhan Liiv <font style=\"11pt\">poetry prize<\/font> for the poem <i>Im\u00e4puu <\/i>(\u2018Mother Tree\u2019, 2019).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom:0.28cm\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\">Kauksi \u00dclle has been publishing poetry since 1980. Her first collection <i>Kesk umma m\u00e4ke <\/i><span style=\"font-style:normal\"><span style=\"font-weight:normal\">[\u2018In the Midst of One\u2019s Own Hill\u2019]<\/span><\/span><b> <\/b>appeared in 1987. She is one of the most outstanding cultivators of V\u00f5ru dialect poetry, and rose to prominence at the end of the eighties representing the V\u00f5ro movement. Kauksi \u00dclle belonged to the Hirohall and Eesti Kostabi $elts literary groupings, which promoted an \u2018ethno-futurism\u2019 that united heritage with modern culture. The world-view of the traditional village society, close to nature, has a significant role in Kauksi \u00dclle\u2019s work, mingling inherited subject matter with the modern world.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom:0.28cm\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\">Themes from international myths are linked to the folk poetry tradition in the ballad collections <i>Han\u00f5 vai luig\u00f5 <\/i>(\u2018Geese or Swans\u2019, 1989), <i>Agu ni Eha, Morn and Eve <\/i>(1995, with a parallel text in English), <i>Kuldnaan\u00f5. Kultanainen <\/i>(\u2018Golden Woman\u2019, 1997, with a parallel text in Finnish) and <i>N\u00f5s\u00f5q r\u00f5\u00f5mu m\u00f5rsija <\/i>(\u2018Rise, Bride of Joy\u2019<b>, <\/b>2001, which is shot through with motifs of life and death, love and fate. Personal subject matter is found in the poetry collection <i>K\u00e4\u00e4n\u00fcp\u00e4ev <\/i>(\u2018Solstice\u2019, 2003, Gustav Suits poetry prize). A significant role in her work is played by \u2018immaimmamaa\u2019 (\u2018Grandmotherland\u2019), and \u2018vanaim\u00e4\u2019 (grandmother) as the fosterer of traditions and values.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom:0.28cm\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\">The same applies to her prose: in her collection of short prose <i>S\u00e4ng <\/i>(\u2018Bed\u2019, 1997) and <i>Huuv <\/i><span style=\"font-style:normal\">(\u2018Backyard\u2019<b>,<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b>2000) and her novels. In the latter she concentrates on woman\u2019s life and choices, with an important place being given to sexuality and social norms. <i>Paat <\/i>(\u2018The Boat\u2019, 1998) depicts the life of a village woman from the forties to the nineties, dealing among other things with the dissolution of the traditional village way of life, and <i>Uibu <\/i>(\u2018The Apple-tree\u2019, 2003), concerns the life of a contemporary woman in economic difficulties. A woman\u2019s life has a central place also in the play <i>Taarka (<\/i>2004) about the Setu bardic singer Hilana Taarka. Kauksi \u00dclle\u2019s text was the basis of a feature film of the same name (2008, directed by Ain M\u00e4eots).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom:0.21cm\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\"><i>A.
