Silvi Masing, 30. I 1928 \u2013 3. IV 2014), book illustrator and graphic artist, is mainly known as the author of the popular children\u2019s book <i>Jussikese seitse s\u00f5pra <\/i>(1966, translated into English as \u2018Jussike\u2019s Seven Friends\u2019, 2014). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0.28cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"line-height: 108%;\">She was born in Mulgimaa and matriculated from secondary school in Viljandi. Silvi V\u00e4ljal graduated from the State Art Institute of the Estonian SSR in 1952, earning high marks for her diploma work, the illustrations to part I of A.H. Tammsaare\u2019s novel <i>T\u00f5de ja \u00d5igus <\/i>(\u2018Truth and Justice\u2019). Thereafter she was directed to work as an artist and designer of the children\u2019s magazine <i>Pioneer<\/i>. This revealed her gifts as an illustrator of children\u2019s literature, which became her main activity. Altogether Silvi V\u00e4ljal illustrated two hundred books. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0.28cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"line-height: 108%;\">One of the most brilliant expressions of Silvi V\u00e4ljal\u2019s creative originality was the children\u2019s book <i>Jussikese seitse s\u00f5pra<\/i>, with her own text and illustrations, the first printing of which appeared in 1966. Jussike, who used to only love Sundays, becomes friends with all seven days in the book. So far the book has appeared in more than twenty languages with the author\u2019s illustrations. In 1967 a cartoon of the same name was made by Tallinnfilm, based on the book, directed by Heino Pars. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0.28cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"line-height: 108%;\">\u2018A Mulk from Halliste\u2019, as Silvi V\u00e4ljal called herself (\u2018mulk\u2019 means a person from Viljandi county), retained a love for the Mulgi dialect all her life. A reader in the dialect, <i>Mulgi keelen ja meelen <\/i>(\u2018In the Mulgi Tongue and Mind\u2019), compiled by her and Lembit Eelm\u00e4e, and illustrated by her, appeared in 2004. Part of the work is Silvi V\u00e4ljal\u2019s Mulgi text with pictures from memory of her childhood.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0.28cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"line-height: 108%;\"><i>L.
