VIII 1970) is an Estonian playwright, commentator, prose-writer and children’s author. Kivirähk is one of the most celebrated and popular Estonian writers of the modern period. His works have been extensively dramatized and screened.

Andrus Kivirähk graduated from secondary school number 32 in Tallinn in 1988 and from his journalism studies at the University of Tartu in 1993. In the early nineties Kivirähk worked for various newspapers as an editor for culture and humour. Since 1992 he has worked for Eesti Päevaleht, in which appeared a large number of his texts which have later come out in book form. Kivirähk published his first humorous articles in the journal Pikker at the age of 15. Kivirähk’s first play was staged in 1992 at the Puppet Theatre and bore the name Vanamehed seitsmendalt (‘The Old Men from the Seventh Storey’).

One of Kivirähk’s most significant characters is Ivan Orav, a comic figure suffering from the national pathos, the stories of whom began to appear in Eesti Päevaleht in 1992. The book Ivan Orava mälestused ehk minevik kui helesinised mäed (‘The Memories of Ivan Orav, or, the Past as Light Blue Hills’) appeared in 1995. It proved very popular with the public. As series about Ivan Orav was made for Estonian Television; the leading role was taken by the actor Andrus Vaarik, who has remained the personification of Ivan Orav in other television series and plays, for example in Kivirähk’s stage adaptations Meri ja Orav and Orav ja Ilves. (Orav=squirrel; Ilves= lynx; Meri=sea; the latter are names of Estonian presidents.)

Ivan Orava mälestused expresses one of the central tricks in Kivirähk’s work: to talk about well-known, given events in history from an unexpected, often comical or absurd angle. Ivan Orav recalls the first Estonian republic period, 1918-1940, when violin-playing could be heard even from the moon and the birch-trees bore apples. In Ivan Orav’s view, Estonia’s fate is aligned with that of the whole world. Animals, birds and plants, even planets, participate in Estonia’s history. Such a poetic stance also appears in Kivirähk’s novel Liblikas (‘The Butterfly’, 1999), which tells of the early days of the Estonian theatre.

An essential place in Kivirähk’s work is occupied by his two most popular novels, Rehepapp (‘The Old Barny’, 2000) and Mees, kes teadis ussisõnu (‘The Man who Spoke Snakish’, 2007, published in English in 2015), which have been translated into many languages. Rehepapp, the most popular work of Estonian literature in the early years of this century, has been called a new core text of Estonian literature. Rehepapp is based on the fundamental myths of Estonian identity and also undermines them. At the same time Rehepapp may be regarded as, in its way, a parody of a historical novel: the novel depicts Estonians coming to terms with the Baltic-German people of the manor. Rehepapp is thus a dialogue with domestic historiography, more precisely, with the image of the Estonians’ 700-year night of slavery. The work also gives a prominent place to animistic beliefs in spirits and demons, with which humanity has to try to get along. Comparisons have also been made between the protagonist of Rehepapp, Sander, and what Estonians see as their own best characteristics. Rainer Sarnet’s 2017 feature film November is based on Rehepapp.

Mees, kes teadis ussisõnu tells a story of a mythical time when not all people had resettled in towns and villages, but lived in the forest. The main protagonist Leemet becomes the last man who is able to speak the language of snakes and thereby preserve the link between people and the forest with its inhabitants. It is one of Kivirähk’s gloomiest works, in which one may recognize a critique of inhumane modernization as well as the abandonment of ecological symbiosis and a nature-centred world-view to the course of history.

Kivirähk has also been a very prolific and popular writer for children. Among his best-known and most translated children’s books are Sirli, Siim ja saladused (‘Sirli, Siim and the Secrets’, 1999) and Kaka ja kevad (‘Poo and the Spring’, 2009), and he co-wrote the scripts of the internationally famous animated films Leiutajateküla Lotte (‘Lotte from Gadgetville’, 2006), Lotte ja kuukivi saladus (‘Lotte and the Moonstone Secret’, 2011 ) and Lotte ja kadunud lohed (‘Lotte and the Lost Dragons’, 2019).

In 1993 Andrus Kivirähk won the Oskar Luts Humour Prize; in 1995, 2000, 2006 and 2014 the Literture Endowment Annual Award; in 1998 the Friedebert Tuglas Short Story Prize; in 2000 the Tammsaare Novel Prize; in 2004 the Order of the White Star, V Class; in 2007 the Estonial National Culture Award; in 2008 and 2016 the Eduard Vilde Prize in Literature, among many other honours.

I.
