October 1938 in Haaslava parish in Tartu County) is an Estonian writer, poet, and politician.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: medium;\"><br><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: small;\">She graduated Tartu Secondary School No. 2 (1956) and then from Tartu State University (1961) as an Estonian philologist. Since 1959, her married name is S\u00f6\u00f6t.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: small;\">She worked at the newspaper <em>Edasi<\/em>, the Tartu Widget Factory, and the Estonian Television studio in Tartu. At the same time, she taught at several Tartu schools and at the Tartu Academy of Theology.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: small;\">She has been a member of the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union since 1958 and was head of the Tartu division from 1981 \u2013 1990. She actively participated in the activities of the Tartu Young Authors\u2019 Association.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: small;\">From 1990 \u2013 1992, she was a member of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Estonia and the chairman of the Social Affairs Committee as well as vice-chairman of the Constitutional Assembly\u2019s workgroup of the citizens\u2019 fundamental rights. In 1980, she signed an important landmark in Estonian politics\u2014the Letter of 40 intellectuals\u2014and, in 1991, voted in favor of Estonian independence in the Supreme Council.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0 <\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Hainsalu began writing poetry during her school days. Her first poetry collections contain youthful perceptions of life, love poems, and work and nature motifs, which were later followed by more serious contemplation and social critique. She adopted the style of depictive poetry that was common at the time. She has written sonnets and ballads influenced by history and folklore. From poetry she moved to prose, analyzing social problems through the life troubles of both the young and the old. She has also greatly contributed to Estonian children\u2019s literature for several generations.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: small;\">She has received many awards: the Looming Annual Award (1981, 1985), the Eduard Vilde Prize in Literature (1983, 1998), the Tuglas Short Story Prize (1987), the Karl Eduard S\u00f6\u00f6t Prize for Children\u2019s Poetry (1992, 2015), 2nd (1996) and 3rd (2000) places in the Estonian Novel Competition. In this century, she was awarded the Order of the White Star, V Class (2001), Order of the National Coat of Arms, IV Class (2002), Order of the National Coat of Arms, III Class (2006), the Tartu Great Star and the title of Honorary Citizen of Tartu (2012), Bengt Gottfried Forselius Society\u2019s Great Golden Ducat (2012), the title of honorary member of Vanemuine Society (2015) and the Literature Endowment Lifetime Achievement Award (2021).<br><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: small;\">She has participated in compiling various teaching materials.
