\n\tHelmi M\u00e4elo (until 1923 Helmi Pett, 1923-1924 Helmi M\u00fchlberg, 13. IV 1898 \u2013 17. VII 1978) was a prose writer, writer for young people and social activist.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tShe gained her education at the Uderna village school in Tartu county and at the Estonian Youth Education Society\u2019s Girls\u2019 Gymnasium in Tartu, where she graduated in 1919. From 1921 to 1924 she studied in the Faculty of Law at the University of Tartu. She was a member of the Ilmatar student society and of the Estonian Women Students\u2019 Society. Helmi M\u00e4elo was active in civic life. On her initiative Mother\u2019s Day became celebrated in Estonia. She was a member of Tartu Town Council. For 16 years she was the general secretary of the Temperance Society. Helmi M\u00e4elo was the editor of the journal Naiste t\u00f6\u00f6 ja elu<\/em> (\u2018Women\u2019s Work and Life\u2019) and one of the founders of the journal Eesti naine<\/em> (\u2018Estonian Woman\u2019). For 16 years, until 1940, she was the editor of Eesti naine<\/em>. In 1944 she fled to Germany and later moved to Sweden. There she was the secretary of the Baltic Humanist Association. Helmi M\u00e4elo belonged to the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union Abroad, the Estonian PEN Club and the Swedish Writers\u2019 Union. She is buried in the The Woodland Cemetery in Stockholm.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tM\u00e4elo wrote 12 novels. Her major work is the five-volume series of family novels Oma veri<\/em> (\u2018One\u2019s Own Blood\u2019, 1965), V\u00f5\u00f5ras veri<\/em> (\u2018Alien Blood\u2019, 1966), Keerds\u00f5lmed<\/em> (\u2018Knots\u2019, 1968), Teised tuuled<\/em> (\u2018Other Winds\u2019, 1970), and Homne p\u00e4ev<\/em> (\u2018Tomorrow\u2019, 1972). She also published books for young people and of popular science, children\u2019s stories and brochures about temperance and education.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 1959 the first part of her autobiography appeared in exile under the title Talut\u00fctar<\/em> (\u2018A Farmer\u2019s Daughter\u2019). The book tells of M\u00e4elo\u2019s childhood before the Republic of Estonia. The work contains vignettes of the Uderna school and student life in Tartu. The next book of memoirs to be published, Elutegevuses<\/em> (\u2018Activity in Life\u2019, 1961), collects memories of youth and her active work for temperance and public education in the years of the Estonian Republic. The series of stories from life continued with the work V\u00f5\u00f5rsil<\/em> (\u2018Abroad\u2019, 1974), in which the author describes the escape through Germany to Sweden and the first years in exile. In the last part, entitled Sammud edasi<\/em> (\u2018Steps Forward\u2019, 1975) Helmi M\u00e4elo writes of her activity as a refugee in Sweden.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tHelmi M\u00e4elo\u2019s most significant work of popular science, Eesti naine l\u00e4bi aegade<\/em> (\u2018The Estonian Woman Through the Ages\u2019) appeared in 1957 in Lund (reprinted in Estonia in 1999). The book contains the most complete survey up to that time of the history of Estonian women, offering a periodization of it, and presented biographical data on, and short introductions to, many well-known women.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
